I also live south of the Kleenex line and I have the Naim stuff as part of the household contents insurance with More Th>n (RSA as it was)

The insurance co needed to see the receipts for the 500 ( I could hear them laughing at it from here)

My total house contents was less than your quote for the Naim stuff - I would think that you could have a higher risk post code

The insurance has inspected the house and I have to comply with some requirements.

...as i can think of no other reason why it should cost this much. Seriously though, I too am insured with "More Th>n" (but evidently "less than" some insurance companies). Items costing over £1,500 must be identified separately so I have £4,000 worth of Hi-Fi listed. My total contents policy costs about £150 I think.

My contents does not have a limit on single items so the Hifi is covered as part of the contents. I have raised this to cover new bits such as a CDS2.

I said this in the previous thread , but here goes again - The Nationwide Building Society dont give a shit how much your hi fi costs, or anything else, just as long as the sum insured fully represents the full value of your contents.

Used them for a few years now - very competitive prices, and none of this each item nonsense...

My Norwich Union policy operates the same way.

Same disclaimers as AnoPAX above.

You could also try the AA - their policies are also total cover. For £50000 contents cover (the minimum they do) + a bike I'm paying £22/month. Obviously this would be a lot cheaper without the bike.

As someone who has an ongoing insurance claim I think I ought to warn you that replacing the contents of your home is likely to be MUCH more expensive than you imagine.

We have been SHOCKED at the cost of furniture, clothing, kitchen equipment etc.. I accept that Hi-Fi , CDs & vinyl are relatively easy to price and work out a replacement cost for but things like carpet, curtains, sofa's, clothing etc. Ouch!.

My basic point is that you may well be underinsured on contents even if you know what the Hi-Fi's worth. Suppose I had 500+ albums on vinyl. Replacement cost? Well assuming £15 for the CD version - £7500+, + 200+ CDs at £15 that's £3000+ so lets say £10k. Plus the Hi-Fi at £10k = £20k. Most contents insurance policies allow for c. £40k. So, in this hypothetical case, the Hi-FI and music account for 50% of the contents value

Do make sure that you are well covered for all your contents belongings, aside from the hi-fi. The replacement cost is almost certainly more than you think. The alternatives aren't pleasant.

regards,

Mark

I have contents only cover which has the hifi listed (each component individually) and is given special cover that allows for accidental damage and is new for old replacement. With upto £500 of bikes (that is just not realistic!) it costs £12.75 a month thorugh Sun Alliance.

Shop around. Get 5 barrel locks and locks on your windows, possibly even an intruder alarm.
