Help with rogue model numbers

Posted by: monkfish on 03 September 2002

Hi
Can anyone shed any light on these models {Naim Nap 125 Power & Naim NAC 225 Pre Amp}
The only other info I have on them is that they were manufactured by naim either in New Zealand or for the NZ market.
Thanks
Jim

IIRC there was a NAP120 made under license in New Zealand by Avalon Audio, for a time, in the seventies. I think the pre was called a NAC22. Dunno if they were judged a success in full-on Naim terms, but are still nonetheless Naim boxes that do that Naim stuff - I've heard a couple of examples over the past year and they were playing better music than most other kit on the market today.

Back then it was almost impossible to own decent (read: imported) hifi kit, with stiff foreign exchange controls, import quotas and licensing. I think the under license thing was a way of getting product to a market with a thirst for decent gear.

HTH.
