102 vs 112

Two weeks ago I bought me a 102 and 180 once again. As I didn't have the napsc shorting plug, I was forced to use the Nait 5 untill the plug would arrive. So, I connected the 180 to my Nait 5 + HiCap and started playing. A big improvement this was and I felt like there was music all over the place. A week ago I received the shorting plug and connected the 102 + HiCap to the 180. I expected a big improvement, but there wasn't. In fact, after a week of listening I still have the idea that the Nait 5 + 180 sounded better. I feel that with the Nait as a pre the sound is much more "floating" around the room, as where the 102 gives less spatial information. I haven't connected the Nait 5 again to test it, so it could be my memory, but has anyone compared the Nait 5 as a pre or the 112 against the 102? I am just curious...
Regards, Bas

Connect the Nait 5 again
I s'pose you have to be admired for wishing to trust your memory on this comparison, but why make life complicated for yourself?
I'm going to keep this post simple by not even adding in an analogy
!!! There's always money somewhere for the next upgrade... !!!

The Nait runs off its own, while the 102 is running off the 180?
Maybe a flatcap or snaps or hicap is the answer.

Bas,
I did the 112 v 102 demo with a 150 as the amp. I much preferred the 112 for all the same reasons you describe- less in your face, and much more spacious. Overthe same weekend, I found that I preferred the 82 over the 112, but not enough to spend the extra grand.

maybe it is a set - up problem...( End user interface, Doug will like that one ) all of the 5 series is less dependant on what and where it is placed...the 102 is so much more likely to sound worse in a pourly set up system and thus showing you there is a problem..."a pour carpenter always blames his tools "....go back and play with the gear you will find hidden music in it
