PJ Harvey - White Chalk

PJ fans, do you like this LP and what sort of system do you have.

This may seem like a silly question however I posted on this forum a while back saying I did not care much for this album even though I am a fan.

On the weekend I did a partial cable upgrade so my system is 5x/flatcap/Conrad Johnson CA200/804S with a new Nordost Tyr interconnect and a new power cord from the same brand (Naims new cord is not available in Aus yet - I did ask). Anyway the improvement is such that the fragile quality of this record shines through where before it was sort of harsh and annoying.

I guess my main reason for posting is to retract my previous lack of enthusiasm for this recording. I am also interested if other have found this recording to be fairly system dependent.

Yes - not typical PJH, but very good.

My system is in my profile.

I have just ordered this album on vinyl last night Smile , so I will post my thoughts after a good listen.

Not sure if your question is relating to the quality of the album material, or the quality of the recording on CD, or both ?

There are a number of CD's whcich can irritate in my system (check profile), but I haven't had much of a problem with her previous releases.

Cheers,

Marti

I really like this PJ album. My basic Naim system has always been fine at letting me enjoy it.

I have no LP option. I guess I was commenting on the recording. Some recordings can sound good on anything, others don't change much whether you play them on good or not so good systems. All my other PJ recordings were sounding fine before I upgraded, except this one. Her early CDs in particular sounded great, lots of dynamics and good use of soft and loud elements (take note record companies)

On her latest disc it could be her use of acoustic instruments and the way she is singing. Maybe what I like about this recording is in the fine detail.

Different from her earlier records but I like it and enjoyed seeing her on tour here in Sydney.

It’s a very good album in its own right. Hugely enjoyable. I hope it doesn’t mark a permanent departure from what I love about PJH. Still, the back catalogue’s not too lean, so plenty to dig back into. I think the sound quality is particularly well done. very spacious and well textured.
