please help a Beatles novice

Posted by: Thomas K on 18 January 2004

I confess to having lived 35 years without owning a single Beatles recording. (I understand that in some circles this is a capital offence.)

Could you please advise me on which three or four albums to get as a starter kit. Maybe "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Sgt. Pepper" and "Magical Mystery Tour" (my girlfriend wants the latter for "Penny Lane")?

I'm particularly interested in which CD versions sound best, and less interested in compilations.

Many thanks in advance.

The 1st and 3rd songs recorded for the new album? If so, what was the 2nd song?

Strawberry Field was recorded from August 66 to Jan 67 (the most art from Nov. to Jan.)and was released with Penny ane on Feb 17, 1967
Penny Lane was recorded from December 66 to Jan 67 and released with Strawberry.

Sorry but, Revolver was released September 26, 1966; Penny Lane and Strawberry Field were not created at the time !!

Pepper's sessions began in December 66 with When I'm sixty four !! and was completed in April 67. For your info, the sequence on side-A was supposed to be: Sgt Pepper, With a little help from my friend, Being for the benefit of Mr Kite, Fixing a hole, Lcy in the sky, Getting better, She's leaving home. This order has to be altered because of vinyl limitations.
Penny Lane and Strwberry Field were supposed to be included on the album; thas information was given by Georges Martin himself and is written in the booklet that is included with the CD (US version). Georges Martin also said that the single that includes those two songs was probably the best ever made in the POP music and admits the error to have not include those songs on the album.

Another Beatle story .....
