New Bowie

What do we reckon then - best since Scary Monsters? Not as good as Heathen? Better than? Ltd edition worth the extra?

Can't comment yet personally, as it hasn't arrived, but might tomorrow.

Yea, its alright.

The recording of his voice seems better than heathen, which was a little sibulent.

Its heavier and more upbeat than heathen, and I rekon comes under grower.

Or more acuratly I have only listened to it once, but this is because of being very busy

Not as good as Heathen, but pretty good, if nowhere near such zeitgeist-defining greats as Low and station To Station.Bowie is never going to be anyhing more than "good" or "really good" these days, but at least hes not roducing abortions like "Tonight", "Never Let Me Down", Tin Machine or that absmal Drum & Bass album ("Earthling" was it?).

Not sure if the limited edition's worth it though. However, if any of you spot the limited edition of the underrated Black Tie White Noise, then I suggest you pick it up - it's rather good.

You think so? I found the re-mix CD tiresome. The DVD is OK - good interview, naff videos. Much prefer just listening to BTWN myself!

Have you seen the TV ad? Ace, in it's creepy way.

After more listens I thinks its good, well worth 16 quids of bowie fans money.

Need to swat up anyway as I am seeing him in November, can't wait.

My copy hasn't arrived yet, but I'm surprised you find Heathen sibilant.

I only listened to it the other day and that's certainly not what I heard (on CD).

In fact it's a rather good recording, as has been much of his recent output, although I'd tend to agree it doesn't reach the heights of earlier work, it is nonetheless a good listen.

I rate him much more a live performer now, every band of his I've seen play for the past few years has been so tight, the recent BBC broadcast I caught was excellent.

My missus hates the vinyl version of Heathen because on it Bowie's lisp is more evident, reality sucks eh?

Yea, I heard heathen on CD on a big system, 500/552 etc through NBLs and it sounded supurb on that.

For my more humble set up his voice is very difficult, the same for the live at the beeb 2000 CD as well.

Has he done justice to Jonathon Richmond's ' Pablo Picasso'?

Bowie - Tonight (Not that great really)

Well, I have to say I'm rather disappointed - definitely not as good as Heathen, or for that matter Hours. Maybe it's because it's performed by the touring band, whereas Heathen mostly wasn't? Definitely not the same light and shade, anyway. Nor, on a couple of hearings, such strong tunes. 'Fly' on the bonus CD, is a goodie, so you may as well plump for the limited edition if you're going to buy it. Clever graphics though, and maybe it will grow.

Kevin, I would say that the music on Heathen is as good as anything he's ever done, although of course anything he's ever likely to do is never going to have have the cultural impact of the early albums, and how could it? Except for maybe as a role model for the over fifties dithering over that M&S chargecard [polycotton slacks are not the only way] or perhaps other middle aged musicians [new Stones, Steely Dan Sting or Bowie - which do you want to hear? No contest, I think.]

Mine arrived today, and I haven't listened in it's entirety yet, as I turned it off to try some other discs that arrived (that I listened to completely).

Probably says something about the content, but it's early days. On intitial listen though Heathen is a lot better.

I'm pleasantly surprised with Reality - some quite decent tunes all in all.

I didn't buy Heathen until quite recently (it reached bargain basement levels Wink) and was quite surprised. Looks like Mr Bowie is going through a flush period...

Jay

ps I'm still finding it difficult to get "Everyone says hi" off Heathen out of my head. It's far too catchy for it's own good! On first listen it just about made me puke, on repeated listening I began to like it. Truly bizarre!

Yeah...well it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Jay that was the tune he released, only really hit radio 2 and was not a success.

Realised that I do not have hereos in my collection, what am I like, will dig it out today I think.

Felt the same as you Jay when I first heard "everyone Says Hi". I saw the gig he did at the royal festival hall when he launched "Heathen" he played the whole of Low followed by Heathen.

It looks like other bands have copied this idea like the Cure who played 3 albums consequentially after each other.

The Heathen album really hold it's own compared to his early stuff but it got a bit silly when he did "everyone says hi" when the audience all started waving at him!....

After the "listen to it a million times in a day" test I have to say that Reality isn't quite up there with Heathen IMHO. Doesn't quite "feel" like an album but rather a mix of tunes....

It really "feels" (not sound!) like that Robert Plant album "Now and Zen" or Queens "Innuendo". That old and new mixed together sound that appeals initially but becomes completely unlistenable after a few months...
