So, how's your 'PULSE'....???

Posted by: arf005 on 09 July 2006

Yup, that dvd again.....

As some of you may know I can't watch my copy just yet!!

To whet my appetite, how is it....???

What's the sound mix like...???

Did you watch (listen) to it in stereo or 5.1....???

What are the extras like, if you've had time to watch them.....???

Ok, I know I might be slightly premature - seeing as it's realeased (in the uk) today, but I know some of you have it already, and if not then you have time to buy and watch it - before I get out of bed and back to work on nights today at 6pm.......you know you can do it!!

Cheers in advance,
Ali

Ali,

I'm very pleased to report that this release is absolutely stunning, in fact sonically it's probably the best sounding concert DVD I have heard. Visually it has been enhanced significantly from the VHS copy I have. NOt only has the video been re-edited but the clarity of DVD plus better angles gives a far better approximation of what it was like to be there in 94.

Sonically the bass is incredible - they had an impressive PA rig that night and this recording captures the immense power, drama and scale of the sound. I found myself actually worrying whether the REL STorm V was about to self destruct - it's quite an astonishing experience.

There's a 15 mins behind the scenes documentary shot on handicam which is very compelling if you're a floyd nut but I suspect would bore people who weren't afficionados!

I haven't checked out the video collection yet but I'd say anyone who buys this disk is in for a serious treat - it really is magnificent and worth the wait.

Enjoy!

Jonathan

Absolutely brilliant. Playing in glorious 2 channel through my Naim system the sound is fabulous. Crisp images too. Well worth the wait. Pity there's no little flashing LED!

Hopefully winging it's way from Jersey.

Hum, I wouldn't say the picture is anything to write home about. But then I don't have the best system to exploit it. Certainly I have had much better pictures out of other DVDs.

The sound seems very good. Similar to the Pulse DVD. I only have stereo and would like to hear it in 5.1 but hey ho.

nice packaging as usual.

Have grown used to Pulse in 2-channel from my Laserdisc copy.

Without doubt the picture is light-years ahead of the LD, and the 5.1 mix seems very good after the one listen I've given it.

Not so sure that the 2 channel mix will be able to compete with the analogue variant on the LD, but would be happy to be proven wrong.

Was initially disappointed by the lack of DTS, but the option of DD in standard or high bit-rates is very nice... the high version plays fine on my current gear, so will happily settle for that.

Love the nice touch on "One of these days" - Nick Mason's scary vocals come from BEHIND!
Spine-chilling!

Sorry but I think they fucked around with the sound far too much.

Just put on Pulse CDs, and breathed a sigh of relief. The DVD is all over the place in stereo, sound drop outs, compression, all sorts. What a dissapointment.

For a live concert its not bad, yes the sound could be better Gary but I think it captures the atmosphere pretty well,

PB. Fact is we probably both have the pulse CDs. Play a track side by side and tell me which got the better feel for the concert.

What you mean compare my CD555 to my Toshiba, hmmm I'll bet the CD wins hands down.

Sure the CD is better Gary but the DVD is still very enjoyable,

PB

Ps just playing sorrow right now, compare it to the vinyl version, no contest but I wouldn't expect it to be!

For me it's still sinking in. I went to the Earls court gig twice (one of the best things I ever did getting the second lot of tickets) I have just had a prelim listen, but had - had to disconnect the DVD5 first to sort out a wiring problem (sky v lightning bolt.. sky box lost for the second time) It had to be a little quiet as the windows and doors are open.
I happen to think they have done a great job with the 5.1 surround. Some stunningly good use of it in point of fact, but each to their own.
One thing became very apparent very quickly. If I was offered tickets to the Earls Court gig or Hyde Park.. it would be Earls Court 99 times out of every hundred. This DVD can never capture the scale of it all, but the final three numbers give a fair impression of it.. right down to the maroons going off on the speaker stacks at the end. Has anyone ever come up with such an imaginitive light / laser / video show as that before of since?

Sure, there are parts where the film shows its age and the transcription to digital shows this in a few parts, but it is what it is, a truly remarkable concert from nearly 12 years ago.

If that had been filmed with todays technology can you begin to imagine how good it would be? Well you wont have to wait long as I guess 'On an Island' will be out for christmas and we will see just how much technical wizardry has moved on. Sorry, 'Not bad for a live concert' simply does not give justice to this.
I just cant wait till I have the house to myself.. boy is this system going to get a thorough workout.

Steve, I am at pains to point out my disspointment comes with a standard stereo set up, i.e. DVD played through a two way naim rig. I have no doubt it sounds fantastic on 5.1 and would love to hear it this way. But the stereo version sounds like stereo trying to do 5.1 Its not quite right.

Garyi,
Hey, no problems! I can imagine just what that would do to the sound effects.. my guess is this has been made fairly specifically for surround.
One of my (now very defunct) party tricks was to play any track from the (heavyweight) vinyl and then switch to the cd version. The difference is soundstage was amazing. Apparently the recording engineer (James Gutherie?) was an analogue fan and made absolutely certain he had the best analogue masters he could do, so that any vinyl would be as good as it could be. I guess it was also digitally recorded.
You will enjoy the full effect when you get to see / hear it!
