John Mayer-Where the light is-Loving It-Any others?

Posted by: leakypipe on 10 March 2010

Somewhere I read a post that talked about the variable quality of CD's and somebody referred to the live recording by John Mayer as being superb.

Being an ignoramus I had not heard of him but tracked down the album on the net and ordered it blind. What a great albumn and what a great recording! Sounds superb on my newly acquired Naim kit. Loving it!

So in thanking whoever it was that recommended it I wondered if there were other recordings of a similar genre that are also considered great CD's for both sound and sound quality that you might point me towards?

The DVD of Where the Light Is thrills me, as does Mayer's studio album Continuum. Not as impressed by the song-writing on the latest one, Battle Studies, though. Try! is good, too, but actually I prefer the trio set on Where the Light Is.

Also, if you can ever catch the TV show Austin City Limits, there's a great live set along the lines of Where the Light Is ... solo, trio, and full band.

All best,
Fred

The Crossroads DVD from Dallas features John Mayer playing with Eric Clapton and he more than holds his own. Not a huge fan of most of his material but he can play with anyone.

I love watching the DVD on my laptop (via DVD-Rom drive) with the optical cable plugged into the Supernait's DAC. It sounds as if I have John Mayer in my study / reading room. Saving up for the vinyl. My favourites are the acoustic versions of 'Neon' and 'Daughters'.

Thanks guys.
After a bit of a musical absence it has shown me that there is loads out there that I have not yet heard.

What really impressed me was the quality of the recording which really shone on my naim.

Although I wouldn't want to buy CD's just because they were well recorded I would like to get some more material similar to this

Try John Mayer's earlier concert DVD titled 'Any Given Thursday'. Although not as fantastic as 'Where the Light Is', it still is nevertheless, very enjoyable to watch.
