CDX fraud?

Posted by: Bas V on 18 May 2003

Hi guys!

After bidding on Ebay on a couple of CDX's, I have gotten two weird e-mails. Both offered me a CDX, brand new in the box very cheap (UKP 750 and UKP 900). The first person told me that he got it from a friend who worked at the financiar police and they confiscated it from someone who had no licence. The second one says he has it from the mother of a friend who died. They don't give serial numbers of the players. I proposed buying by Tripledeal, but I was told that that service isn't fast enough.

Are these frauds and has anyone experienced something the same???

Regards, Bas

Bas, you know this is dodgy.

Don't buy them.

Ask for the serial numbers and then check with Naim. If they won't give the numbers, drop it.

Bas,
I've had a similar offer once after bidding on something (can't remember off hand what it was). It was a guy in Italy wanting to sell me something for far less than it should have been... as in all these cases, either the goods don't exist and they're just going to take your money and disappear, or if they do exist then they're stolen - and hopefully we don't need to go into the morals of buying stolen goods.

That's exactly what I thought. The offers I got were from Spain and Rumania, so they say, but I wouldn't even be surprised if it was the same guy!

In the first case I asked for the serial number. The guy said he looked and didn't see it. So I said it is about 7 x 20 cm's and right on the box! He then said that there was waterdamage on the box so he couldn't see it. I then said he should look on the CDX. He then said it didn't mind, because I would have the CDX on trial for a day to check if everything was alright. But, by then my money would be in Spain somewhere already. Right, as if...

I'm still mailing with the guy in Rumania to see if I can get a serial number. Wanna bet?

Regards, Bas

PS If anyone has a decent CDX for a good price ;-)

Bas,

I'll bet you won't either.

Stay away from them, there are plenty of good CDX's on the market.

Even better, I will chuck in a new CDX if you help me liberate $5,000,000
from my Kenyan bank account. I will need $10,000 to get the paperwork underway ..

I get about 2 or 3 a week like that. Does anyone ever fall for that.

Hello to all!

I went through the same Bulls*#t on Ebay a while ago with a "brand new in the box NAP 250."

I was bidding on a supposedly(?) new, only out of the box for photos to be shot for the ad listing and I get an e-mail from somebody offering the same model amp at only 1/2 to 2/3rds. the price!

Obviously, I excitedly e-mailed him back and then that's when things started to get very strange... He needed payment wired via Western Union right then and there! I offered Paypal and he refused. (Supposedly that would take too long?)

When I asked him why he needed payment so quickly, he claimed his father was sick in Spain and he needed the money immediately so he could get medical attention for him. When I asked how he could afford to sell this amp at such a discounted price, he got defensive about the whole thing and "I TOLD YOU MY FATHER IS VERY ILL!"

Something just wasn't right abut this whole thing. So, I decided to do a little investigating on my own. I e-mailed the 3 most recent bidders on that amp on Ebay and asked if they had been contacted by this same guy. (I gave them his e-mail address to be sure we were talking about the same person.) Amazingly enough 2 of the 3 people e-mailed me back right away. They both had been contacted by this same Scammer, although each was given a different story regarding the reasons for the quick sale.

Like I've shared with you guys before here on the forum, my Grandfather's words still ring true... "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!"

If you ever get approached by someone like this again, report them to the "Ebay police". They'll eventually re-appear under a different screen name or e-mail address at another time, but at least this makes it temporarily inconvenient for them.

May the buyer beware! Wink

Thanx,
TNJB

BTW - I asked for a serial# from the guy that listed the Ebay ad and never got a reply. Since I never heard anything from the seller, I eventually backed off the bidding because he had "0" feedback listed. Once the auction was over, I e-mailed the winner and he said he hadn't gotten any replies to his questions to the seller either! I don't know if he ever "closed" the deal or not, but here's a case that everybody involved seemed to be hiding something.

It is probably the same guy. Today I got the same e-mail again and another one.

One time I have gotten a serial number. The guy said he had the CDX from a friend who died 7 yrs ago and never used it. The serial number he gave me indicated that the CDX was from 1998...

I now have three more offers. These guys just won't stop...

Can I please use this thread to remind people not to publish full serial numbers in adverts?

It could just make it more possible for these people to scam some unfortunate bugger.

cheers, Martin

This email was sent by an eBay member via eBay's email forwarding system.
If you reply to the email, your response will go directly to the member and
not through eBay.

eBay does not tolerate spam (i.e., unsolicited commercial email) and is
taking steps to protect members from this abuse. In addition, solicitations
to buy or sell items outside of eBay violate eBay rules and are not covered

dispute resolution. If this is an offer to buy/sell items outside of eBay,

I used to email back these people seeking serial numbers and if they would accept payment via Escrow - one gave me a serial number of a NAP 250 as AZ31467 which I didn't think was a very good guess on his part. Now I just tell them to f*** off and I hope they rot in hell for their thieving ways.
Interesting to see that now they are copying Ebay's mail forwarding system text to try to make the offer look genuinely backed by Ebay while simultaneously including the fact that Ebay does not tolerate unsolicited commercial email at the bottom of their mail.

Sorry for such a long post but if it prevents anyone here from being ripped off by these scum then it is more than worthwhile.

Did anyone else get the Paypal scam that looked like an official PP e-mail and asked you to re-enter your details and give your PIN? Yeah right.

Or the bloke from Nigeria/Iraq/Zimbabwe asking if you fancy doing some money laundering - just give them your bank details?

Most of the spam is predictable but some gets me. I get;

Porn (as we all do)
Increase penis size (no need, right?)
Increase breast size (Mr SephenieB, are your breasts too small?)

And the weirdest ones..

'Do you need a new septic tank?'
'864 Troubles flushing your toilets?'

Smile
