cartridge question
Posted by: Mike Cole on 05 November 2002
Does anybody know of any high output (> 4.5mV) cartridges that aren't pure crap. Something that keeps the PRaT alive but doesn't sacrifice too much in the way of tonality? It would probably be used on a Rega P-3 or P-25.

Dynavector make some high output MC carts which enjoy a good reputation on this forum and elsewhere. Try the 10x4, 20x or even the XX-2 possibly, funds permitting? Seemingly they integrate well with Rega TTs and arms.

I have owned a 17d2 and am using an xx-1, I have no idea of output, but what a sound.

Both f Gary's choices are low output. The Grados are the only ones I know with output as high as requested. How come you wantthat much output?

What about the Adikt? Just read an excellent review about it...

The Adikt has 6.5mV output, same as the Goldring 1042 (not surprising as its generally understood they make it for Linn). The DVs are only 2.5mV
I auditioned the Adikt against the DV10x4 and 20x last week in an LP12/Ekos. It was capable enough but lacked the magic of either of the DV carts, of which I thought the 20x was marginally better but not really worth the extra dough - it just went up to £350 and the 10x4 to £225 at which price it's still remarkably good VFM.

I am always surprised by the lack of enthusiasm for the Goldring 1042 on this forum. I think they are excellent MMs , use them and so do many of my friends.

I may use this with an old tubed receiver that has a MM phono stage with a sensitivity of 4.5mV. I already have a Goldring Eroica, a Linn K18 II and my trusty DV 17D2 (which I use for my main system - Linn LP12, Nait3, Credos). The Goldring and Linn are higher output, but still not enough. I am assuming the Adikt is made by Linn judging from the name. I'll have to look into that one. From what I have heard, the Grados are a little on the slow side and don't track well. Myabe I 'll try to find a stepup transformer instead.
Thanks for the replies.
