Music collection software
Posted by: worm on 17 August 2006
Slightly off topic, so apologies.
Has anyone had any experience of any of the music collection software available?
What I am thinking of is something to manage the list of titles/artists/tracks etc. Could be useful from an isurance point of view and general nerdiness etc.
Not really looking to actually store the music on a PC as I am happy with CDs.
I guess I could set something up in Excel, but there seem to be a number of shareware programs that offer auto completion of track listings etc.
Anyway, any advice gratefully received.
Cheers

Geneal nerdiness aside, I can't see the point of cataloguing one's music collection. If you need a record of its contents for insurance purposes, just photograph it - it's quick and cheap.

I can it's so that I can find a specific CD(LPs are in alphabetic order).Plus I like to know when I've bought a 2nd or even 3rd copy of a certain album.

Hello Worm
I use Collectorz http://www.collectorz.com/music/ .All you do is pop the cd in your computer it finds the id code? then downloads from the internet.Sometimes it can find multiple cds, limited editions etc.
If you click the link you can download a trial version,if you like it buy it and you just put a code in and the cds you have inputed are kept too.
You can export a basic list into excel for backup purposes.
Really a great product.
Hope this is what you are looking for.

This is the one I use as well. Be warned that putting in your initial collection might take some time, after that it is easy.

Thanks guys
Looks just the job for what sounds like being a wet weekend!
Are either of you running the Mac version? I could run either the PC or Mac versions but would prefer to go for the Mac provided it was comparable.
Thanks again.

This has come up a few times before, maybe worth doing a search.
Rather than spend money on a programme which may have problems when you try to enter older stuff, why not use Excel to make a simple list. The longer bit is the initial entering of your existing collection but once this has been done it only takes a few seconds to put new stuff in. Works for me.

If you are on the Mac there is a great piece of software called Delicious Library. You can scan your barcodes, manually enter barcodes or search via Amazon and add to your library.
I use this software and Its great.

I guess the advantage of the software over Excel is that you only have to input the minimum of information and the rest will be retrieved from web sources.

Just had a look at Delicious Library, it looks really cool. I especially like the idea of using the little camera in the iMac as a barcode scanner. How cool is that !

Yes Delicious Library really rocks! Ive cata logued all my LP's and I'm now onto my cd's. Another cool feature is the shading on all the album artwork on the shelf. Even LP's are bigger than cd's which intern have a jewel case frame automaticly applied.

Another happy user of Delicious Library here. Works very well.

I can see the attraction in something like Delicious Memory but it must be a bugger trying to get 12" vinyl into the computer CD drive.

I use the Mac version of MusicCollecterz
only problem you have to overcome is a self image problem as you obsessively compulsively catalog all your CDs. <g>
There is a forum that makes most of the contributors to this form appear quite close to being human <g>

Well I downloaded Delicious Library on Saturday. What a fun bit of software to use!
Once you have got the knack of waving CDs at the iSight camera, it is a doddle. I e-mailed the guys at Delicious Monster with some feedback / queries and they were great and provided me with a really useful resposnse by return.
There is a downside. I can see myself already getting obsessive about it (Derek - no problems with my self image but my wife thinks I have gone mad). Searching Google images to get exactly the right cover artwork ( I still can't track down the cover for the unofficial European release of Zappa's - Does Humour belong in music).
Next step will be to put the catalogue in a custom order so it exactly replicates the order on the shelf.
Highly recommended.

PS one tip - if you are based in the UK don't forget to set Amazon.co.uk as your preferred database to look-up in before you start.

I use the www.Collectorz.com software. You get an initial free use of 100 CD's. You can then upgrade to the full version for approx. £30. Well worth it as previous post said, "you just pop your CD into the drive," tracks are listed, and an automatic internet search, lists all tracks, running time, cover photos etc. Very easy to use.

I use the collectorz software on a mac g5 running OSX. I really like it, especially after migrating about 3500 entries successfully from my windows-based laptop where I originally stored the data. I have downloaded a version of Delicious just to compare and I have tried it out a bit. It is a little nicer looking, and more fun in an Apple kind of way. It seems that the collectorz software is a bit more robust in that it has coded to include just about every piece of information you can possibly think of for a cd/lp. Delicious seems a bit more basic. If you have a Mac with a iSight camera built in, delicious will use that as a scanner and read the bar code on your cd and grab the details from the 'net (if it is new enough to have a barcode.) Collectorz does it by reading the id tags on the cd when you put it in the drive. Each CD takes about 15 sec., from the closing of the tray to reading, downloading and opening. It pops the info into a list and you can do a whole slew of cds this way. It works with amazon and CDDB if amazon doesnt have it. Use to work with Allmusic.com too, but some bureaucratic bull@#$@ shut that down. Collectorz works well for me for 2500 cds and roughly the same amount of LPS. The geek factor aside, I find it useful, like others, to quickly see if I have already bought something. (Those spur of the moment "gotta have it" thoughts in the music store are often not original - happened just the other day!) Also useful for the wife to find something she wants to listen to - she can browse in a quicker, more interactive way (by genre, etc, or maybe cover art?!?!) and pick something out to listen to.
The delicious also integrates with ipod and itunes (heaven forbid) - and similarly collectorz integrates whatever MP3s that you spent the better part of 2001 downloading like a madman
Good luck and enjoy.
