Native iPad n-stream app?
Posted by: Tog on 26 September 2010
Anyone have any idea if Naim intend to port the n-stream to the iPad so that it can benefit from all that extra screen space? Since getting my iPad it has become almost indispensible and it should be a relatively straightforward to port it across - and yes I do know it works with the iPad but x2 it looks silly.

What, you mean the second-largest company in the world gives their app away for free?

David shame on you...even with Steve's reality distortion field at full throttle Apple are still a long way from even the second largest company in the world...
Ok so a teeny bit larger than Naim but only just...

Tog,
If market cap is the metric, Apple just became the second largest company in the world, surpassing China Petroleum. Only Exxon/Mobil is bigger.

Once upon a time, but in my living memory, Naim was a bigger company than Apple.

Market Cap is imaginary money ....
But seriously Naim's target market includes those with ipads who will want to use them to access their media - surely a port to ipad isn't asking too much...

OK guys - am using the N-stream app and on a basic level it works...
but here's the thing
this is a premium product and it has to get better quickly. The Uniti is a fabulous bit of kit ..simply fabulous - clear coherent sound wonderful engineering...the app is a way of making it and the Qute unbeatable ... but if Naim aspires to be a Bentley at the moment the n-stream is the audiophile equivalent of a Fiat Panda.
It is slow, especially if you have a big library, slower than the remote in fact. Cover art is hit and miss - mostly miss and the design ignores all the best features of the devices it is intended for - iphone ipod touch.
It is not even a David v Goliath thing - forget Apple, over at Linn a guy in his upstairs bedroom is leading the way with Chorus HD to manage their streamers. It works, it uses the Ipad and it looks good. Sonos/Soolos et al are not waiting around either.
Apple's remote app was designed by a team of one, works pretty flawlessly and looks fantastic. I know they don't charge for it but I would be quite happy to pay for it.
Naim are now playing with the big boys in a global market. Their equiment is great but the world of digital streamers is dog eat dog and the N-stream is not good enough.
Please guys - tell me you are developing it and the next version will be better!

I could not have put it much better myself.
I currently have a qute and linn DS on home dem and have to be honest the control and interface side of Chorus DS wipes the floor with the n-stream. Little things like playlist, art work and speed of retriving data all add up to a better package.
I am omly using the digital out from both products but currently the better control from the linn based solution is probably going to mean I wont be buying the qute.

I haven't compared with LINN apps but N-stream is not cheap and should be best in class.
I hope that Naim takes this seriously and release a new version that really match the best, I'm qu(i)te sure this is a success factor for the Qute.
