What phono boards are in an 82?

Posted by: thenaim'sjustbill on 06 February 2003

I'm considering the purchase of a used 82... the seller says "There are two phono boards part no. na526/1" Does that mean this pre will accomodate both MM and MC? Will there be any problem with running an 82 with the rest of my gear?

Confused Please advise!

Thanx,
TNJB

My System: a NAC62, a Hi-cap, a NAP 140 (which doesn't seem to be straining,) a Meridian 206B CDP, ProAc Studio 2 speakers, an LP12/Basik/K9 (yes, I know this also needs to be addressed at some point) and a Creek CAS 3140 FM Tuner.

Na526 are straight through boards. This means the 82 won't accomadate either MM or MC cartridges as it stands. You need either NA522 for MM or NA523 for MC. There are 2 boards, 1 for right and 1 for left channels. The straight through boards are for CD players and other hi output devices.

I've already got myself into this mess... Instead of going to my local dealer (it's a few hours drive) I bought NA523 S and K boards on ebay. Opened my NAC 102, plugged first S board, nothing happened, then K, nothing again. Even cut wires going from the DIN socket No.1, just to be sure that nothing's left undone...
Am I missing something in this art of connecting LP12 to Naim?
My next day off which I can spend behind the wheel won't be any time soon, so any suggestions will be highly appreciated!!

I've recently gone up to a used 82 to run with my 140 (& Hicap) and everything sounds fantastic. I almost never listen at high volumes, so I'm not exactly pushing the 140.

My dealer put a pair of MC boards into the 82 that make the output a similar level to the CD. Previously, on my 102 I had to turn the wick up much further to get the same volume from LP. I have no idea what the number/code the boards are, but you're dealer will be able to sort you out.

My next stage is to find a second Hicap to add to the 82 - should really be flying after that!!
