A new Hendrix Al*** to be Released!

Posted by: tonym on 12 January 2010

"A new Jimi Hendrix album featuring a host of unreleased studio material is to be released on March 8.

Tracks featured on 'Valleys Of Neptune', which is produced by Hendrix's stepsister Janie, along with John McDermott and Eddie Kramer, include covers of Cream's 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and Elmore James' 'Bleeding Heart'.

The original version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience rendition of 'Hear My Train A Comin'', along with alternate cuts of 'Ships Passing Through The Night' and 'Lullaby For The Summer' are also included on the album, which was recorded at several studios in London and the US between 1968 and 1970.

Janie Hendrix said that the album offers a "deep insight into [Jimi's] mastery of the recording process and demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as he was a guitarist."

The tracklisting for 'Valleys of Neptune' is:

'Stone Free'
'Valleys Of Neptune'
'Bleeding Heart'
'Hear My Train A Comin’'
'Mr. Bad Luck'
'Sunshine Of Your Love'
'Lover Man'
'Ships Passing Through The Night'
'Fire'
'Red House'
'Lullaby For The Summer'
'Crying Blue Rain'"

An essential purchase for me. I can remember Hendrix appearing on "The Lulu Show", which was transmitted live, starting off playing "Hey Joe", saying "Let's forget this rubbish, here's a dedication to Cream", then starting a blinding version of "Sunshine of Your Love".

Be interesting to hear his studio version. Let's just hope the recording's of reasonable quality.

Thanks for that. It may be extremely interesting.

Or deeply disappointing.

I wonder which. We'll have to wait a couple of months to find out, but I'll probably pre-order it anyway!

I've just checked a press report which includes a very intriguing sentence: "That same day[Mar 9], the Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project will release ... new deluxe CD/DVD and vinyl editions of the Hendrix classics." Sod the CDs and the DVDs, just let me have the vinyl!

I read somewhere that the rights to 'Are You Experienced', 'Axis:Bold As Love' and 'Electric Ladyland' had been sold to Sony and that they were all being reissued in 2010 with a disc of previously unreleased material.

Lets hope we can get back to the original Electric Ladyland record cover. I'm still trying to hunt one down in someones old collection where they might want to get rid of it and being unsuspecting of its possible value.

Depends which cover , there were 2 different ones. I assume you mean the 'artistic' one with nude ladies. Interestingly Jimi didn't like or want that cover.

You could always just buy something off the top shelf if you're that keen to see bare breasts.

The original Electric Ladyland cover wasn't just about bare breasts. As an eighteen-year old I was fundamentally interested in it's inherent artistic merit.

There's been hundred of albums of previously unrelesed Hendrix sessions released over the year. Most of them have been dreadful. I find it difficult to imagine that this is going to be any good havcing heard some of the other dross. I think it would have been better if only the official releases had ever been made available.

Yes , how true.

Most of the unreleased tracks/albums are ok but do not come anywhere near the original albums in either content or production.

Also all the original albums have been expanded / remasterd by the Hendrix family . I hoped they would do a good job but unfortunately the 'loudness wars' effect has been employed. Just listen to one of the Experience Hendrix releases against an original Polydor release. Take First Rays of the New Rising Sun against The Cry of Love [same album-different name].The EH one is good but somehow seems lacking. Enlightenment comes with listening to the Polydor. I have now replaced all my EH discs with original Polydor ones with better results in every case.

Funny how First Rays of the New Rising Sun was said to be Jimis planned follow up to Electric Ladyland.
Now the same is being implied with Valleys of Neptune.

I wonder why ? $$$$$

True i will buy it to see/listen and hope i am not dissapointed.

As for the practice of adding a dvd to each cd on 'the making off' , who cares. I would sooner have a high quality release as per the original album.

Michael.

I've just had a quick look at amazon.com, and pre-ordered the new CD, to be released on 9 March.

What's exciting, though, is that the list does indeed include remastered 2010 pressings of the classic original vinyl LPs. I may just wait for some feedback on the quality of the pressings before committing myself to any purchases, though.

Thought that some of you might want to have this confirmation of the vinyl re-releases.

PS: The CDs are remastered too. Will this entail wholesale repurchasing the CDs and LPs? I fear so!

If you don;t already have Classic Record's vinyl reissue of Axis: Bold as Love, I suggest you run, or tap your keyboard immediately. It's a superlative all analogue reissue. Sounds fantastic.

Here's a stream of, allegedly, the title track, Valleys of Neptune:

http://tinyurl.com/yagn4nk

Sounds decent enough, but seems to be missing a lead guitar part, at the least. Hendrix often used several guitar parts, but this sounds like just the original basic track recorded simultaneously with drums and bass. The only reasons I can think of for the missing parts are either that Jimi never got the chance to overdub his other parts, or he did play something that somehow wasn’t usable, for either musical and/or technical problems. Of course, I wasn't there so I don't really know for sure, but I've listened to enough Hendrix to hear that it sounds incomplete.

Shame ... could have been really great. The song sounds a bit like the Cry of Love songs, which I love ... Freedom, Night Bird Flying, Ezy Rider, etc.

All best,
Fred

I stumbled upon this great quote from co-producer John McDermott:

spinner.com/2010/01/27/jimi-hendrix-valleys-of-neptune/

Well, the interesting thing with Jimi is that unlike his contemporaries at that time, he owned his own master recordings and didn't have to record at his record company's studio like, for example, the Beatles did. As he became more successful and the demands on his schedule were such, the studio became a place to write and develop material. As we saw with 'First Rays,' what he would do is look at particular recordings and say, "Well, I can overdub this. I can make a change here." That was his work approach: to continue to tinker and refine and keep going back with fresh ears. With [the song] 'Valleys of Neptune,' even after the version we put on the record, he was still thinking and considering ways of improving that song prior to his death. He had this ceaseless creative spirit. We certainly don't want to take the position where we're thinking for him. It's a snapshot, a window into that period without necessarily saying what Jimi was thinking.

This pretty much confirms my hunch that this particular track, at least, was considered unfinished. But I appreciate McDermott's snapshot metaphor, so I'm eager to hear the rest of the album.

All best,
Fred

What does Janie Hendrix know about anything ?
Posted on: 27 February 2010 by Mike-B
Just heard a track on the Jonathan Woss show (sorry I'm not admitting to be a closet wosser, it was on shop muzak)

If the rest of the CD is like that, its an 100% essential must have.

Roll on 9 March & hurry up Amazon

Janie Hendrix (sister of Jimi) chats to Mark and Stuart about the new Hendrix album.

Radio 2 tonight (1st March) on the Radcliffe & Maconie show. I'd imagine there will be a couple of tracks played.
