A new Hendrix Al*** to be Released!

Posted by: tonym on 12 January 2010

"A new Jimi Hendrix album featuring a host of unreleased studio material is to be released on March 8.

Tracks featured on 'Valleys Of Neptune', which is produced by Hendrix's stepsister Janie, along with John McDermott and Eddie Kramer, include covers of Cream's 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and Elmore James' 'Bleeding Heart'.

The original version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience rendition of 'Hear My Train A Comin'', along with alternate cuts of 'Ships Passing Through The Night' and 'Lullaby For The Summer' are also included on the album, which was recorded at several studios in London and the US between 1968 and 1970.

Janie Hendrix said that the album offers a "deep insight into [Jimi's] mastery of the recording process and demonstrates the fact that he was as unparalleled a recording innovator as he was a guitarist."

The tracklisting for 'Valleys of Neptune' is:

'Stone Free'
'Valleys Of Neptune'
'Bleeding Heart'
'Hear My Train A Comin’'
'Mr. Bad Luck'
'Sunshine Of Your Love'
'Lover Man'
'Ships Passing Through The Night'
'Fire'
'Red House'
'Lullaby For The Summer'
'Crying Blue Rain'"

An essential purchase for me. I can remember Hendrix appearing on "The Lulu Show", which was transmitted live, starting off playing "Hey Joe", saying "Let's forget this rubbish, here's a dedication to Cream", then starting a blinding version of "Sunshine of Your Love".

Be interesting to hear his studio version. Let's just hope the recording's of reasonable quality.

Well I am currently listening to Valleys of Neptune and all I can say is that 'Hear My Train comin' is worth the price of admission alone.

Would love to see a release of the Albert Hall show.

A CD of the Albert Hall show was given away with the Sunday Times a few years ago and, to my ears at least, it really wasn't very good, with Hendrix coming over as a very spent force indeed.

Anyway, ewemon, I had an extra copy of that somewhere and, if I can put my hands on it, I'll send it to you. Let me have a hunt around.

Breakfast with Henrix - better even than rare scrambled eggs with smoked salmon.

This is a bit special, the reproduction compared to old Henrix on LP is far more open with defined instrument positions standing out more in the mix, the better dynamic's & at the same time more delicate touches make it very emotional - & delicate is not something said often with Hendrix.

It makes the old LP's sound very flat. And IMHO makes the case for the 3 LP's to be re-released as both CD & LP with a remix using modern recording equipment - alla Beatles/Apple. Its not bastardizing the originals, it will be simply bringing out the potential locked away in the recording.

--------------------

Graham, I was at the RAH gig & agree he was not at it. I had seen him a few times before & assumed he did not like the hall. But about 3 years later I met up with Noel who I knew quite quite well & he confirmed all was not well with the Experience that night.

I really like the shorter version of Bleeding Heart from that Alber Hall album, it's one of my favourite Hendrix tracks, to me, it conveys a sense of immense playing power being reined in and used to simple, but dazzling effect.

I like the title track and the version of 'Hear My Train A Comin' is also good but overall I was a bit disappointed.

I know that we're not going to get anything of the quality of the albums that hendrix released during his lifetime but I thought that the unreleased material in the box set was much stronger.
