32.5 to 72 question

Posted by: Rasher on 18 June 2003

Since upgrading my power amp to a pair of 135's, my poor 32.5 pre has been turned down again while using the tuner input for the CD player. The volume pot is hovering at the "barely on" notch. It has come to the point that I either need to fix this (is there a way?), or change to a late 72 with CD input. Is this essentially the same pre-amp, an upgrade, or a backwards step? I'm not wanting to spend money right now, so would not consider a "real" upgrade at this time. Comments appreciated.

It don't get much better with a 72 pre. My CD72T is pretty loud at about 8 o'clock.LP12 & Adict at about 10-11.

Rasher--

The 72 is, in general, a worthwhile upgrade over the 32.5. I've lived with both extensively. I don't know if you'll get much relief volume wise--I think most of that depends on the sensitivity of your speakers.

There used to be a variable input board available for the 32.5 to permit level adjustment, but I understand that it also did nasty things to the music.

Best,

My volume control is usually between 8-10 oclock on CD, and 10-1 oclock on vinyl. I don't seem to suffer any ill effects from having the dial set low, whereas I used to with my Nait1.
