One difficult question!
Posted by: Martinleon on 23 April 2008
Most if not all on this forum have an extended library of CD and/or vynils. Here's a tough one:
If you had to keep only 1 (yes just one) which one would it be and why?
I had to think a bit for that one. It would be easier if I had to choose one per category (rock, classical, jazz, etc.) but the idea is only 1 so here goes:
Selling England by the Pound for the music and the nostalgia!
Your turn!

Tough one. It would either be The River - Bruce Springsteen or Genesis - Seconds Out.
This time I'll choose Seconds Out

Extreme desert island disks - I like it!
Are we allowed a box set?

Not possible, even when I go on a drive of 50 miles I have to have at least 10 CDs to choose from, usually about 30 for longer drives.
But since you asked, my desert island disk (singular) would be Van Der Graaf Generator 'Pawn Hearts'

Several good replays, already!
Mine would be Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Deja Vu.
Or Joanie Mitchell - Blue. I can't decide!!!
Btw, I like to keep the LP version, is that allowed?

A difficult choice, but on most days I'd choose Darkness on the Edge of Town by Springsteen.

I'm sorry it's just too hard I can't do it. I tend to quite contemporary and rarely play much of my old stuff (as it's on vinyl and I haven't a TT makes that easier) but my favourite albums change week by week. I'm just too fickle

You can't get off that lightly, go on. The house is ablaze, the family and pets are safe. You have rescued your kit. You go back toward your collection as you hear the rafters about to give way.....you can reach just one. What do you hope it is?

It would have to fully express my desperate emotions of only being able to listen to one record - in other words it could only be:

It would be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for me. Need something to keep me feeling better cause my house just burned down

Difficult - I know every HMHB track off by heart and it is beyond me to pick their best album, so I won't even try and with no home to go to then I might as well go to their concerts.
So instead, I'd take this masterpiece because no sane man (or woman for that matter) could ever tire of hearing it.
Anthems in Eden, the 1969 album by Shirley and Dolly Collins with The Early Music Consort of London directed by David Munrow and featuring Christopher Hogwood It's a set of folk songs with musical arrangements for viols, recorders, sackbuts and crumhorns. There's nothing else like it.
The original vinyl issue has only eight tracks. The first track is the Anthems in Eden song-story lasting 28 minutes and 7 seconds. In 1976, Shirley added six tracks with help from the Albion Band and a new album, Amaranth had the original on one side and new recordings on the flip. The 1993 CD combined all the tracks and lasts 69:56.
My choice is the original vinyl release
1- A Song-Story: A Beginning/A Meeting/A Courtship/A Denying/A Forsaking/A Dream/A Leave Taking/An Awakening/A New Beginning
2- Rambleaway
3- Ca' The Yowes by Robert Burns
4- God Dog by Robin Williamson
5- Bonny Cuckoo
6- Nellie The Milkmaid
7- Gathering Rushes In The Month Of May
8- The Gower Wassail
The traditional songs in the story are: Searching for Lambs, The Wedding Song, The Blacksmith, Our Captain Cried, Lowlands, Pleasant and Delightful, Whitsun Dance and Staines Morris.
The players are
Shirley Collins (vocals)
Adam Skeaping (bass viol)
Roderick Skeaping (rebec, treble and bass viol)
Oliver Brookes (bass viol)
Michael Laird (cornett)
Richard Lee (descant and treble recorder)
Alan Lumsden (sackbut)
Christopher Hogwood (harpsichord)
Dolly Collins (organ)
Gillian Ried (bells)
David Munrow (soprano and alto crumhorn, bass rackett, tenor sordun, treble recorder)
Chorus: Michael Clifton, Ray Worman, John Fordham, Royston Wood, Steve Ashley and John Morgan.

Oh what the heck. Prefab Sprout: Steve McQueen. The sparkly re-master with extra acoustic tracks. Nostalgia choice (it brings back fantastic memories) as well as brilliant music.
In fact let's get really tough and make it one track: 'Bonny'.
C'mon guys, a whole album is just too decadent.

I dont' know about decadent by my choice of The Stones' Exile on Main St is fairly predictable! And if it's to be one track, then either Tumbling Dice or All down the Line.
