Moth Record Cleaner

Posted by: Jens on 18 August 2003

Hi Folks,

I've just taken delivery of a DIY Moth record cleaner kit. Before I get into DIY mode, does anybody who has made one of these have any pearls of wisdom they'd like to pass on? I note, with surprise, that there are no recommendations regarding what sort of cleaning fluid/regime to use. What do you forum users with record cleaners do? I'm particularly anxious not to end up with crap in the grooves. Would be kind of self defeating really!

Cheers, Jens

When making up the kit check that you’ve worked out what all the holes marked on the layouts are for. The hole spacing for things like hinges, switch plates etc may not match the components they are now supplying. Moth do supply a cleaning fluid but I’m not sure what their recipe is. I use 2 parts distilled water, 1 part Isopropyl alcohol and a drop of photographic wetting agent (although I think ordinary detergent would do fine). For other brews see: http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/fluids.html

Hi, Jens

From personal experience I spent far to much time on water proofing the box as in use it doesn’t really get that wet, I use 50-50 IPA water never needed a wetting agent but there again I do have an endless supply of fluid, I would say this be prepared for noise, my only regret is not having one earlier it really does work.

Thanks Simon and Stuart,

I have a few questions regarding the waterproofing and cleaning regimes. Firstly the material. In the instructions they mention 'contiboard'. Never heard of it-I assume it's the same as the melamine that bathroom cupboards etc are usually made out of? Is this correct?

Secondly the instructions do go on about waterproofing. Are you supposed to silicone the edge of your melamine and stick the box together that way (sounds a bit rubbery to me!)? Or are you supposed to stick the box together with wood glue and screws, and then run silicone down along all the joins (makes more sense to me).

Regarding the cleaning regime. You guys just seem to have a single brew which you use. You don't have a wash cycle, followed by a rinse cycle using only DI water? I guess if you are using water and isopropyl alcohol you wouldn't need a rinse, but I was thinking that it might be a good idea if the brew included detergent.

Contiboard is a veneered particle board that comes with wood or melamine like covering, any veneered board should work fine. I agree with Stuart about not getting too worried about water proofing, very little liquid gets onto the woodwork. Silicone the joints after gluing and screwing as you suggested.
I don’t use a rinse, one of the claimed benefits of the vacuum cleaner is that it does not leave any liquid behind to dry and leave a residue. If you are worried about this I would try just an IPA/water mix as Stuart suggests.

I use one application of Moth's own fluid (don't know what it is!).

I assembled the cabinet and then used silicone sealant to the inner joins. The only thing I didn't do was apply the waterproof top-surface (and I have found that I don't need it).

It's a great machine, but one thing has always puzzled me... There's a drainage tap to the front of the machine which leads from the internal 'collection' tank. But, I've never, ever been able to extract as much as a drop of surplus fluid from the inside of the machine! - Is the internal cabinet slowly filling up do you think? !!

I've never got a drop out of the collection tank either. Two other Moth owners I know have the same experience. I assume it means that all the gunk that is washed off the records is caking up somewhere in the innards.

I use 50:50 Iso Propyl AlcoholBig Grinistilled water.

Also: Buy some ear protectors from B&Q - it really is noisy!

But it works wonderfully.

I get no fluid either.

Thanks Folks,

I'll get into it this weekend, once I've got my head around all those holes on the instruction sheets.
