Your Greatest Love Song

Posted by: garyi on 18 November 2003

Well regarding another thread and some music magazine U2s One got voted as the best love song of all time.

I think we can all do a bit better than that.

Whats your favorite love song?

I'll need to think about this.

Led Zep - "Since I've been loving you" (Led Zep III)

That's about as slushy as I'm prepared to go!

Now dem men benn lookin` all aroun` fo` de women
But they always been right there
Nowadays a woman has to haul off and hit a man
to make him know she`s there.
I knew I had to go out n tell all of the women
that I knew that they was there

Chorus:

None o my women have tears in their eyes;
You can ask em bout me I swear
n` they`ll tell you
Uh that`s uh m

Surely you mean - beating "seven bells" out the great Chris De Burgh ?

Current karaoke favourites after a few beers :

  • Love me tender (sh*g me raw)
  • I beg your pardon, I never promised you a throbbin' hard-on

Big Grin

Seriously though

Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton.

"Wonderful Tonight" is quite possibly the worst song ever written. Certainly its not obviously better than "Lady in Red".

Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" gets my vote.

It was the song played as the first song at my wedding. Still married after 14 years so it's not that bad - did the trick !!!

So, classic composition and expert musicianmanship or a "knee spreading knicker-wetter" - what's the definition of "classic love-song" ?
Posted on: 18 November 2003 by Mike Sae
For some gawdawful reason, the "knee spreading knicker-wetter" seems to be Marvin Gaye's bloody "Sexual Healing". Vile song, but I'd be churlish to complain.
I wonder how a How Sweet It Is/Let's Get It On/Sexual Healing medley would go over.

I'm kinda partial to Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight".

In a similar vein, Orbison's "I drove all night" was surely Jason Preistley's finest hour.

Re definition of a classic love song

"knee spreading knicker-wetter" - surely that's the right answer.
Posted on: 18 November 2003 by long-time-dead
So, for me, the answer must be :

Wonderful Tonight - E.C.

Seems like a new thread beckoning............

Aretha's 'Don't play that song' and Edith's 'Je ne regrette rien'.

Only one of which is really a love song. I think you need to go to Wagner for 'Love Songs', and that's a different thread.

Has to be 'Firestarter' by Prodigy, Surely.

This often comes up as a classic of romantic balladry, but clearly those who think so haven't listened too closely to the words. Eric goes to a party and gets hammered so his great contribution to the evening of his beloved is she has to tuck him up on his own and wonder if he'll have a hangover tomorrow. And this is romantic how, exactly?

My fave in theis genre is My Girl, by the Temps. A song which puts a smile on my face just about any time (including times when I haven't had a girl).

Pete.

Love's a load of old crap... ...but that's not for debate here!

My love song would have to be "Too drunk to f***" by the Dead Kennedys, since knowing my luck - he he he...

My anti-love song has got to be T'Pau's "Valentine" - for all the women I've got stuck in that unrequited love thing with (and with each and every one I then explained the feeling away as a prolonged stomach ache)...

For weirdness value, I'd probably go for either "Watching you without me" by Kate Bush (creepy and too dependant on her SO if you ask me) or "Winter" by Tori Amos (for a twisted look on it - well, it makes me think of unrequited love and getting old - which, if you're single, is familiar!).

If I MUST have some slushy crappy ballad, I suppose something like "Lovely day" by Bill Withers has to be the one - partly because of the bassline, the wicked keyboard bits and the awesome sustained vocal notes. And NOTE HERE that I do NOT think this one is crappy - it's class - even though the subject matter's a bit, err, purile.

"Every breath you take" cracks me up - just how many people out there REALLY think that's a love song??? Stalk much?

I reckon "Primary" by the Cure is my favourite love song. Or perhaps "Why Can't I be You" or even "Close to You".

...but if you have to listen to Tristan und Isolde all the way through the moment might have passed!

My vote for knee speading (etc.): Baby let me take you, by the Detroit Emeralds. Gorgeous, sexy and not a cliche.

The Damned, Love Song.

I'll be the ticket if you're my collector
I've charge the fare if you're my inspector
I'll be the luggage if you'll be the porter
I'll be the parcel if you'll be my sorter

Just for you here's a love song
Just for you here's a love song
And it makes me glad to say
It's been a lovely day
And it's okay

I'll be the mail you'll be the guard
I'll be the ink on your season ticket card
I'll be the rubbish you'll be the bin
I'll be the paint on the sign if you'll be the tin.

etc.

'Song for the Dumped' by Ben Folds Five.
Chorus: 'Give me my money back, you bitch...'

All in the best possible taste, of course.

For me it has to be Questioningly by The Ramones.
