LP12 Advice
Posted by: Christopher on 18 December 2002
Finally found a used LP12, just wanted a bit of advice before taking the plunge.
It's a 1988 deck with akito (I) arm & cirkus upgrade... I've not heard this combination, does anybody have experience of this arm? My other kit is CDX/PSX/82/180... will the LP12 give a performance comparable to the CDX/PSX combination?
Any help appreciated, many thanks.

No, the LP12's performance will not be comparable to the CDX/XPS, even though this LP12 is hampered by the Akito.
If this LP12 is in good condition and adjusted close to optimum, it will outperform the CDX/XPS by an order of maginitude or so.
However, the Akito's bearings may be damaged or worn out, in which case, performance will be comparable.
Seriously, the Ittok is much better than the Akito, and the Akito's bearings may be worn out. Have the Akito checked out before buying, or make sure you have enough money to get an Ittok...or ARO/Ekos.
Regards.

Phil,
Problem is finding one - they're pretty rare in the US (esp. LVIII). I've been looking audiogon/ebay for several months and never see them for sale here. For those who have found one in the US, I'd appreciate knowing what's the going rate for one in good condition. FWIW, akito IIs seem to show up on audiogon for $300-$400, but I expect the difference between that and my rb250 is not that great (I could be wrong on this point). In the mean time, I'm thinking the OL structural mod may be a stop gap solution until I find that elusive ittok.
cheers

Bernard,
Thanks for the link - looks like the Linn arms there are from the britaudio website. Have you dealt with them? Does $645 seem like a reasonable price for a LVII?
cheers,
Dan
p.s. FC is working out great - thanks!

$645 is more than twice what I paid in 1977! (But it may be reasonable now....)
I had an LVII with great bearings, and it was so much better than my Akito with semi-worn bearings that it would have been worth $645. And given where the US is going, you might be much better off with an overpriced Ittok than the cash. Oops, I withdraw the remark.
Regards.

$645 is totally outrageous--it was $895 new. Now if this was a product that was supported by the manufacturer, and/or had more robust bearings, it might be worth it in use value. But if the bearings go bad you're screwed. He's been trying to sell at that price for months, by the way.
In the UK and Ittok seems to be about 200 pounds--so no more than $400 for a mint example. It's easier to buy a full deck and trade arms.
The OL Rega sounds decent on a Linn--very smooth but lacking in definition and leading edge and bass compared to an Ittok. I can see some preferring it.

In that case, I'll wait until I'm next in the UK (end of March) and look around then.
