My first impressions are that this is voyeuristic.
But perhaps seeing it will shock people into being outraged enough to ensure that this type of behaviour is punished appropriately.
It is perhaps a lot more impactful than just hearing a news story, which can perhaps leave a degree of detachment even with the best will.
It is probably no different than any other unprovoked attack. The difference here is that seeing it happen brings home the senselessness of it all.
It makes you think "There but for the grace of God....."

I think it was very brave of the parents to allow permission for this video to be released.
These kind of people diserve to be put away, and then, once there, they will wish they had never done it.
Why? Because, remember, there is always someone else bigger, more powerful, and more violent, that would probably do more un metionable things to them than they could ever think of.
Let this scum rot.
I know this may not seem very P.C., but hey, they didnt care did they?
Lets hope they catch em.

This sort of senseless shit makes me sick....
I feel sorry for the family and friends of Daniel, and have signed the petition for whatever good it will do.....why so pessimistic....
See here - when life means 5 years
Just doesn't make any sense to me.

Utterly horrific. Part of me wants to see these thugs thrown to the wolves, the rest thanks goodness there's no death penalty because this is the sort of thing that just cries out for somebody to end up dangling.
As a student I got up to some mischief but this just defies comprehension for me. What on earth is this about? I just don't understand. Social deprivation, exclusion etc. Sorry it's no excuse.

I have dealt with knife attacks several times. Fortunately so far everyone who has attackled me has done it from the front or the side and I've been able to defuse the situation. Doing Krav Maga I practice defence against the knive regularly, but I realise there's not a whole lot you can do to defend yourself against the guy who comes up behind you and sticks the knife in. What is quite common now is kids carrying knives, walking up behind you in shopping centres and sticking the knife in the back of your leg or your bum. Then they can show their mates the blade and be initiated into their gang. I feel very nervous walking around places like that - I'm constantly checking around for people coming near me - one of the perils of the business I'm in.
I know quite a few people who have been knifed and the common denominator is that none of them were aware at the time that they have been stabbed. In fact I know one guy who got into a fight and was stabbed 17 times and it was only when he saw the blood that he realised what had happened - he thought he had been punched. Another guy I know was standing in a market in Israel and a guy came up behind him and stabbed him in the shoulder with a carving knife, puncturing his lung. He chased after the guy and actually ran nearly 150 meters before keeling over. He just thought he had been puched and his bag stolen. My advice to you is if you are punched or attacked, once you are in a safe postion do a self-triage - run your hands over yuour body checking for blood. In the heat of the momnent you may not be aware that you have been stabbed or cut. A fortunate thing to consdider though is that almost all fatal or serious knife attaccks are frenzied and involve multiple stab wounds. It is very difficult to do some serious damage to someone with a knife. Unless you are lucky or not, depending on how you look at it, you will have to nick an artery, hit the heart, which takes a tremendous amount of force, etc to
kill someonwe. Very difficult to do. However what is easy is cutting the forearms and damaging the tendons. If they are cut your hand will become useless. It will basically be a flipper.
Sorry to say all this but knife attacks seem to be becoming mnore prevalent so this stuff is useful to know.
By the way I'm not convinced by the video. The quality simply looks too good. It does look quite convionving in terms of what happens in knife attacks so I suspect it has been stagesd as a copy of a genuine incident.
Incidentally I have seen a lot of knives carried on the street but it is bottles, glasses and stanley knives that scare me the most. They are used explicitely to attack the face and hence cause permanent scarring or blindness. I always wear a tab vest at work and so far I've never needed it but I am conscious that someday I may not be able to defend myself so I practise knife defenses all the time to make sure I'm ready for it when it happens

Im sorry but the punch that was given at the beginning was no way a fake.
Why shouldnt the quality be good? Surely technology is progressing to allow good images from cctv. Thats the whole point isnt it?

I'm basing my opinion on the quality of the CCTV resolution that I have worked and that is a million miles away from what is shown in that video. Of course being England they could well be using much lower resolution to make it easier to go down an ISDN line or to cram more info on the tape

jcs, excuse my ignorance but what exactly do you do that puts you in that much danger? I assume it's something to do with the police or similar?
I saw this video on the AV forums yesterday evening. I posted there that there are no words to describe it and this morning I still feel the same. I was actually expecting to have a difficult night sleeping last night as it did prey on my mind a little but I think that a couple of late nights out recently sorted that

Working on doors. Doing event security, close protection, teaching self defense to security staff, prison and police personnel, that sort of thing. Basically having to deal with drunk jossers with too much testosterone, too little self-control and a glass in their hand
