The NAT01

Chaps

Today I have taken delivery of a NAT01 which has replaced a NAT05. The NAT05 is now sitting in the secondary system.

I have to say that although NAT01's are difficult to locate, they are worth seeking out. They are awsome in their presentation of music. I have never heard a tuner this good before.

I have spent most of this evening listening to various radio stations and all of them sound better than ever before.

I suggest you get one if you want to hear good live music on the wireless.

I also have to say, that I purchased this item from James of Tom Tom Audio and everything was conducted in a professional and gentlemanly manner. We struck a deal over the phone and the tuner was installed within 24 hours.

I would certainly recommend this man to anybody.

Was that the 1984 chrome bumpered one he had? Have you got the Ron Smith Galaxie ordered yet hes still got a few left before he retires?

Yes it is chrome bumpered and it was serviced by Naim 6 months ago.

I shall look into buying another aerial.

It does sound good.

Mick....I don`t know what aerial you have...my Nat01(s) work well enough on a 6 element array, i.e no audible artefacts, however when I installed my Ron Smith G17, the sound quality took a quantum leap.....like adding a scap to, say, an 82 (from a hicap). With my chrome bumpered vesion (which I purchased about 9 years ago), I reversed the cases on the tuner and NAPST, and bought "new" (olive) style knobs from Naim for very little. It then blended in very well with my "olive" gear. In fact, in many ways I think that this looks the best of all the options...the matt - black fascia is more to my taste, more puposeful IMHO, and in some ways the illuminated "naim audio" logo on my newer 01 makes the fascia look more fussy and cluttered, being so close to the digital frequency display. After a service, where Naim re-configured the connections between the tuner and PS to eliminate that (redundant)switch and extra snaic,as per modern 01s, the sound quality is, to my ears, at least as good as a modern 01..if not better.

Laurie

I have a standard 6 element aerial and to be honest it seems to be doing a good job.

I will be calling Ron Smith today but the size of the thing worries me. It will look awful, so I am hoping he does a smaller more discreet version.

I'm glad you're enjoying the NAT 01 Mick, it really is a great tuner.

The reconfiguration of the connections and elimination of the redundant switch that Laurie mentions was completed when the unit went back to naim, which does further improve the sound quality.

Happy listening.

Cheers,
James

Ron is retiring soon and has only a few G17s left. All Rons aerials are modular, so you can fit what you need.

I originally fitted a Circular 5 and have just got the G14 upgrade which involves fitting additional elements to pre-drilled holes, it just needs fitting.

Hierarchy: Circular5 / Diamond 12 / Galaxie 14 / 17 / 23

Mick...I share your concerns about looks......I am even more concerned about structural damage to my house! However it has survived some pretty wild storms in the last 9 years...my house is just back from a cliff-top, so is pretty exposed to wind coming straight off the sea. It is mounted with a double lashing kit on a 12 foot scaffold pole. IMHO, the sound quality is worth the awful aesthetics
