New Shawn Colvin Live Al***

Posted by: Colin Lorenson on 12 June 2009

New album due to be released at the end of the month. So happy Big Grin

She is a special artist who seems to be criminally under-recognised. If the new one is as good as Live 88 ( just Girl, Guitar, audience and sheer artistry) I will be well pleased.

Give it a spin.

Nap-ster that was a track on her album 'Covers' of a few years ago. Some of that lp was live recordings. I can't remember if that was one. An excellent lp and a great cover imho. So was the cover of 'Twylight' (the Band!).

Pre-order here I come.

You are indeed correct sir.
I've actually got the "Cover Girl" CD too! oops.
Reading the sleeve notes Naive Melody, and others, were recorded "Live at The Bottom Line" NYC, August 5+6, 1993.

Seems like there is an Aberdeen grouping on this thread. All Bob Ritchie disciples perhaps?

Nap-ster and Ed, I lived in Montrose for many years and worked in Aberdeen. Oilbiz obviously. Will probably be back there later this summer as my two sons live and work there.

If you like SC have you tried Jonatha Brooke? She was recommended to me by Fred Simon on this forum. Really good. Her latest album The Works is terrific and well worth a punt.

I dropped a line or two about her new live album in the listening thread a few weeks back.

It is another really good album though IMHO not as good as her Live 88 disc.

Crazy is the Gnarls Bakley song which she does well.

Colin, I heartily agree on Brooke's The Works ... her best work in years, consisting of mostly unreleased Woody Guthrie lyrics set to her tunes, but a couple of originals of hers, too. I haven't been enamored of some of her more recent albums, but this one recaptures the authentic vibe and magic that had originally won my heart in her earlier work.

Very eager for Colvin's new live one. Live 88 is one of my faves, and this one has the potential to surpass as she's been maturing like fine wine in the 20 years since. What a brilliant, masterful musician she is, most apparent when it's just her and her guitar. Can't wait!

I've heard her perform this, and to my ears it's better than the original.

All best,
Fred

Don't find it as dynamic as the first Live disc Fred.

That doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with her performances on the new one. I just prefer her first Live disc

Also think her song choice on the first disc was better though her acoustic versions of tracks off A Few Small Repairs are brilliant.

But as I say it is my personal opinion.

Even after all that I still recommend the album as she is at home in a solo setting.

For anyone who wants a listen to the samples go to amazon.de.

Fred, I agree with your thoughts on the later albums. Still better than 90% of what else is out there, but my heart goes back to Plumb, Steady Pull and 10cent Wings, plus the Story albums. My personal fave is the early Live album. It's just magical.

The Live in New York album I enjoyed especially for the DVD version second disk.

Good to see your new album is on the way. It's on my list

All the best
