Snaxo/Burndy/Supercap vs. Snaxo/Snaic/Hicap
Posted by: Naheed on 26 January 2003
Well i could'nt resist going for the supercap, but 2 days in i feels its not at all what i was expecting.
I sat back (after leaving overnight to warm-up) and heard only subtle improvements.
Yes, there was another layer of detail/texture, the bass was that bit more deeper and tuneful (should firm up further in the coming days), and an added crispness, and of course more PRaT.
BUT - all these improvements(?) where just subtle refinements.
I know the supercap takes time to come one song, but i cannot honestly see it progressing sonically that far. I found the same the same when going from 82/Hicaps to 82/Supercap.
All the leads are pointing the right way, snaxo is well away from any power supplies, etc...

Goodness me, Naheed,
Maybe you need to get yourself a decent stand ;-)
But seriously, you've probably been moving your stuff around a lot lately -- give it two weeks w/o changing anything and try changing back to the Snaic/Hicap configuration. I'd be interested in what you think then.

Maybe this is just reality, Naheed. The subtle wins you describe may indeed be subtle, but still you hear more and better. I am rather sceptical of these "I had to pick my jaw off the floor" posts after every upgrade. Perhaps I'm just deaf, but my experience is it doesn't work that way. You hear nice changes, and it's only when you visit someone with the kind of sistem you used to have, you notice you'd never want to go back again. So I'd rather like to thank you for not writing that kind of extatic promo copy one usually posts after a purchase, but just giving us the truth. (Oh, and be prepared for a lot of stand and mains advice.)

Naheed,
a friend of mine with 82/2xhi and SNAXO/Hi was recommended to Super the SNAXO before the 82, to my surprise.
Herm is right - you need to get your mains sorted (sorry Herm!!) You'd might find you'd be better with a passive system with sorted mains than active strangled on your house ring. Active systems are very fussy to get working really well.
cheers, Martin

Thomas - will do, as long as i haven't sold the hicap before then. Yeah the Mana stands are not as good as the Fraim are they
NOT

Herman - I think your closer to the truth mate, aside from the 52 and going active, no other upgrade has seemed VFM to me, yet i hear people talking of such gigantic sonic leaps - maybe i need some cotton wool buds

Martin - the hicap active system worked perfectly fine. . .
I feel the only setup issues remaining in my system are the mains, and my snaxo not residing on Mana Glass (its on the mdf), but this was also the case with the hicap setup (apples for apples).
For me i'm beginning to think the Supercap is way overated, it should be termed a refinement not upgrade option, now where can i buy these naim golden ears everyone hear uses

Anyway time will tell, i'll swap back next week to the hicap.

I recently went active (52/SBLs) and IMO the Supercap/Burndy is significantly better than the Supercap/SNAIC. The difference is NOT one of refinement. I was using a SNAIC until the Burndy arrived and I would definitely not go back to the SNAIC. Now I didn't try a HiCap but the Supercap/SNAIC should be as good (if not better) than HiCap/SNAIC.
One thing I have noticed (as with all Naim gear) is the warmup time from new is significant. I am about 3 weeks into the warmup (with Burndy) and the system is still improving. I expect this will continue for some time.

My jump went straight from snaxo/snaic/hicap to snaxo/burndy/supercap
I'm hanging in there (warm-up)...
Funnily enough this afternoon, the whole presentation has become very hard, bags of bass (very deep - left me nauseas), and the PRaT seemed mentally out of control, very VERY fast but strangely in control - i gave up listening in the end, maybe the 5 extra snaxo power rails are breaking in

Naheed:
I have experienced something similar. I believe that both our SNAXOs are going through their inital break in/warm up phase. My Supercap was new, too, which no doubt adds to the problem.
I seem to remember from the original Naim forum that the warm up time from shut down (not from new) for active systems was said to be six weeks! From new its probably going to be six months!! I am trying to be patient.
