JBL Speakers

Posted by: dave brubeck on 28 July 2003

..are these widely considered by the forum members as just more american cr*p?

The thing is, there are a pair of JBL Ti5000 speakers advertised at a rather good price in my local paper. Rather odd looking things I admit, but the price alone makes them quite attractive.

Anybody have any thoughts/ experience of such speakers?

I certainly don't think all JBLs are crap - I'm using a pair of their LSR-32 studio monitors with a 112 / 150. I bought a pair of factory refurbished LSR-32s from an online pro sound store for $1400 and they're a fabulous value for the money. The have dynamics that make most audiophile speakers seem broken in comparison.

I haven't heard the Ti5000 so I can't offer any opinion on them, sorry.

I use JBL XTi40's with 202/napsc/hicap/180 combo. I bought them after ignoring mag
recommendations and just listening. No
experience of Ti5000s but JBL produce great
speaks, only ignored in the UK. Give them a
chance you may also be surprised. I have listened to a few other speakers since, none
were better!

I have owned 9 sets of speakers up to the JBL's

I use a pair of 1980's vintage JBL L19's at work. Creek 4140, Rega Radio, and Creek CD-60.

Great sound with the Creek Intergrated amp. Easy to drive and fast. In fact I recall an article in Sterophile magazine where they were compared to Naim, Linn, and Rega speakers as far as speed was concerned.

I refoamed the woofers a couple of yeara ago and at the same time removed the original speaker terminals and directly wired them to NACA 4 cables. Stunning improvement.

Do you like the sound of them? Do they make music rather than hifi? Do they work in the room you're in?

If all boxes ticked 'yes' then go for it!

If not look elsewhere. Do not buy on price alone!

My dad own a pair of vintage JBL Model J325A & it's driven by a Vintage Luxman Integrated L11 - & they sound fab!

They are not crap.

And the old JBL:S, up to the 1970:s had this lovely, polished american walnut finish! In 1978 I was offered a pair of demoed L100 (domestic version of a then very poular studio monitor in pop/rock recordings) for half the list price. I regret today that I didn't buy them.
