Answers to repetitive questions (All contributors welcome)

Posted by: Ade Archer on 23 February 2002

Can anyone give examples of the same old boring questions coming up over and over, the answers to which would easily be found using the search facility. I'm hoping this thread will give the definitive, straightforward, answer to them so we don't hear them again.

No.1
Q.How long will my new equipment take to warm up?

A. Difficult to be precise, but between a few days and a few weeks.

Cheers

My advice is that you should move to London as soon as possible. Maybe go out ocassionally once you get there....

Y'know...nightclubs and such like....

This thread is so banal its almost worthy of Steven Toy

Q: what do folk think about the "invisible" speaker cable?
A: Naim recommend NACA5 because this is guaranteed to have the right electrical characteristics for their power amps. Speaker cable should be considered part of the power amp circuit.

having given this example, i dont actually find anything wrong with repetitive questions. we can in reply send a search specification that provides the answer and also shows at the same time how rich and diverse this forum is. i believe this can be quite useful to new members. i have searched the archives myself and found some very useful information indeed -- dont always agree with it -- but thats besides the point.

it would be sad if new members (or old members) were asked to search the archives before asking any question.

so, whats the best rack for my kit then? big grin big grin

Redeye,
Mmmmm, I sense a guilty conscience.

No,no,no,no, I mean the really boring ones. That ones too interesting wink

...and searching the archives first would stop the repetition.

I doubt whether you could sense your own arse with both hands.

Catatonic levels of boredom will do that to you I guess given time.

Get out more and stop this boring inquiry..... please!

I think Vuk's got a point after all!

I appear to be holding your attention for quite a while. You really should try to get out more.

perhaps i should get out more too, have a life and all that. i cant actually see anything wrong with ade's thread. interesting/boring is a matter of opinion, but if i find any thread uninteresting, for whatever reason, i simply stop reading it. seems to work for me...

Also is it detrimental to sound quality if close to other gear or not? Hicaps etc don't seem to mind being on the same rack as the rest so whats different about the Napsc

I was right about the guilty conscience after all then! Wondered why you were so sensitive.

No, the forum is an evolving thing, people come here, find answers and generally go away to, hopefully, listen and enjoy the music. Despite some of the recent 'propoganda' it is actually a very 'respectful' place. You guys should check out some of the computer forums is you want a more combative style of environment.

Searching the archive though, is always a good idea, there are numerous views and answers to any one question and some of the previous stuff makes very interesting reading. Vuk's earlier contributions being an excellent example, although lately he seems to be in a bit of a funk.

Andy

Vuk isn't a funk, I just think he is depressed that my prediction has come true.

18 months or so ago, I warned him that excess consumption of vodka would render him impotent and give him piles, hence his recent downturn in cheerfulness.

Once he converts to whiskey, he will be fine.

Q: If the thread bores you so much, then why do you read it and post on it?

Twice.

A: You saw an opportunity to have a go at me, you sad little git!

Regards,

Steve.

If the search facility doesn't answer your question, then by all means ask it. Anyway, what the hell, why should anyone worry about what I say. It just seems that so many people ask questions which I'm sure they already know the answer to. A backhanded way of gloating about you're new CDSII or 52 is by asking if it needs to warm up to give it's best. Now, I assume most people who buy these have owned Naim gear long enough to know very well that they will take quite a while to perform, but still they ask, since it's better than posting "I've got a new CDSII and you haven't, so nah nah nah nah nah"

What is your question by the way?

Q: I was thinking about <insert lower level CD Player here> and a <insert outboard PSU here>. Should I really buy a CDX instead?

A: Yes.

Q: I want to use really girly expensive designer interconnects with my Naim. Should I give it all away and buy valves to use with the aforementioned cables, as they are in fact components in their own right?

A: Yes - quite frankly you were made for one another.

Q: Are Kans really that good?

A: Yes - as long as you front them with an excellent source, drive them well, and set them up very carefully.

Q: What about these SBL's, then?

A: They are fantastic, particularly musical speakers. They are however, not the last word in scale. You should have a sound, lengthy demo and decide for yourself - they are not to everybody's taste (those who like bloated, messy bass need not apply).

Q: Is it true that Tony Lonorgan is so Flat Earth it appears he was run over by a steam roller?

A: Yes - in fact there is an ongoing lawsuit with the roading contractor in question - their defense is that in this case Mr Lonorgan's lifestyle has in fact been enhanced, so they're looking for £5.94 for the diesel used. Mr Lonorgan wants a new Tresor bag, as his is now browned with bitumen.

Q: What about this Mana stuff then?

A: Yes - This response was deleted in the interests of reducing the length of this thread.

one thing we could do is also refer people to the unofficial FAQ. i things its very good indeed and covers quite a lot of the ground that people often ask about. i.e. its a true FAQ

well done matthew and others...

the NANA site also has some useful information.

I agree completely with Ken - the FAQ is the place to go. It's well organised, concise, factual.

Q. Is Rico funny most of the time?

A. Yes.

Q. Is Rico wrong?

A. Yes, most of the time.

I can only ask you to explain and delineate! Or I should observe that the indications of humour were omitted in error from your post.

Apart from a very poor attempt at humour it was also the fact that I'm starting to believe that fancy interconnects and valves can make staggeringly good music when partnered correctly.

I know I will soon be driven from the forum . . .

Alex

who is still certain that Naim make the best CDPs

Alex

thanks for that clarification!

I happen to agree with you that valves can indeed "work" - I have enjoyed many systems with valve pre, transistor power amp, in the past. I just not to have such kit in my listening room, preferring Naim.
