Tell Me....

In what way would an addition of a Hicap (or two) improve my current Naim sound: CD3.5 - NAC72 - NAP140 - SBL. Cheers!

I played a trick once on my wife by disconnecting the hi-cap from our then 72 and 140 system. When she came home from work she instantly realised something was different, with comments of 'it sounds like its in mono' and 'there's something wrong with it'.

I have an identical system to yours in my dining room.

Adding 2 hicaps made a big difference.

Everything just sounds clearer deeper and better.

Your best bet is to buy a totally knackered pair for about £275/£300 each and pay Naim £120.00 each to have them fully serviced. That way for about £400.00 you have a Hicap that is a good as a brand new one. Hicaps are the Naim bargin of all time.

You must go for it.

Or, buy just one recent HiCap that doesn't need re-capping yet (say up to 5-6 yrs old), try it with both the CD3.5 and the 72 and see where it makes the most difference, then if you think it's justified go for a second one.(Mick's on a percentage drumming up business for Naim Service dept.) Wink

I put one on my CD3.5 and it makes a very big difference, much smoother and more controlled, deeper and more cohesive bass and reduction in digital graininess. A worthwhile and good VFM upgrade, which you won't regret.

Thanks all for your kind replies and suggestions. My ultimate goal is to add two Hicaps - one to the 3.5 and the other to the NAP72, for a total cost of about £900. But is there a better way to spend the £900?

£900 + selling your cd3.5 will buy you a s/h CDX.
I've not done a comparison between cd3.5/hi+72/hi and cdx/72 but I would guess the cdx/72 is better (source first and all that..) - anyway, it may be worth having a listen.

good luck

Shinpad is right! The CDX is so much better than 3.5/Hi, that it eclipses the benefits of the Hi-Cap on the 72. It's really your best upgrade for the money.

IMHO CDX is significantly better than 3.5/Hi. I upgraded a few months ago and so can speak from experience. I have an 82/Hi though.

Chaps

If the system is used purely for playing a CDP, then I agree that spending the money on a CDX is the best bet.

However, if the amp is used to power a tuner or TT, then a Hicap may be the better option.
