i would like to thank Richard Dane and others for positive remarks re JR in a recent thread in the Music Room about music selection in the naim room at the Heathrow show - and re-hipping me to this outstanding artist.

i bought "Dressed Up Like Nebraska" years ago after a friend who turned me on to Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams also recommended JR. initial impressions were "eh, whatever, sounds like Sunny Day Real Estate goes Alt-Country", and sat untouched on the cd rack.

yesterday, on a whim, i bought "1972" and "Subtitulo" used on cd - i haven't stopped listening to either album, all day yesterday and today. superlative in every possible way. effing fantastic. i think i'll have to give "Dressed Up Like Nebraska" another spin.

Thanks!

I kind of gave him a listen and put him away. I too went on to play mostly Richmond Fontaine & Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown/Cardinals. Maybe I should give him another go.

WARNING. i detest labeling artsist as a general rule, but have to say, i like "1972" and "Subtitulo" because they're Pop infused acoustic singer/songwritter albums and not Alt-Country per se. nothing too deep or profound lyrically speaking. just simple, light, carefree tunes (catchy as hell too) with guitar, bass, drums and some keyboards here and there.

My impression was a bit Nick Drake. I'll give him another go tonight.

Another vote for Nashville, the track 'Streetlights' is about as close to four perfect pop minutes as you will find.

Rouse is a really consistent and enduring artist. I am a bit of a completist with his work and there isn't any of his output which I would be scared to recommend. That said, his last three are all fantastic and the recording quality is great as well.

Another vote for 'Nashville'. One of the very best records of recent years. Bought 1972 on the strength of Nasville but found it a bit of a disappointment, comparitively.

I love 'It's the nightime', first track on Nashville

"I heard your really living uptown, i'm just a downtown fool"

Classic summer record
