Question to EquiTech people...
Posted by: gerry2 on 18 November 2006
I have taken it on blind faith that Naim doesn't recommend line conditioners, and hence never tried any such thing, although I'd read with interest the many posts about Equitech.
Now by fluke I tried a "Noisetrapper 15amp" that a friend brought over, and I was positively amazed at the benefits I heard in my system.
So this has lead me to start web searching these voodoo boxes, and I see there's a plethora of companies all claiming to have a better design, or a better physics principle, and to do terrific things to the electricity coming into the system.
Well, I wouldn't know a line conditioner or a power generator or an isolation transformer from a hole in the head.
Can anyone who has looked into these things point me in the direction of a non-partisan paper or essay that explains the basics of these "treatment" boxes, beyond the standard gloss about "dirty" electricity. So far I'm just spinning around like a top trying to get a bead on the subject.
Thanks in advance.

gerry2-
I have used a 10BQ Equitech for a year or so. The noise floor is 10db lower. The dynamics, tune, and prat are all the better for it..
If you live in California,I could show you what it is all about.
For a start, you might want to read this..

Marc,
Thanks for the offer, but I live in eastern Canada.
Dynamics, tune, prat, and, somehow, balance too, especially, all perked up in my outfit.
I'll start with the thread, and probably have some questions down the road if you can spare a moment here and there.
I'd like to think there's some reason for chosing one box over another, when it comes to laying out the money, although I'm starting to get the impression that when it comes to these things, folks seem to be using mostly which ever one to which they happened to get initially exposed.
Thanks again,
Gerry

I remember reading this avidly, and was strongly considerding fitting one here to my system in the UK. I may have changed my mind after reading this however.
Very interesting stuff.

Steve-
Took a look at the article. I can only say that many of the recording studios in the UK use this product...

Marc, how did you decide on the 10BQ as opposed
to the 7.5BQ. I am considering driving down to Equitech next year to get one for the upcoming SuperNait. Which model would you recommend to me?

Marc,
in all honesty, there simply has to be a way to do as you have, - right here in the UK. I realy like the idea of what you have achieved, without any messing around with so called voodoo boxes.
I am still making enquiries as to just how to proceed.

Another happy 10BQ user....the box while cumbersome is much easier to install than say a 7.1 surround system. I have had this for about 18 months now and like Marc hear NO downside at all....quieter, quicker, slinkier, deeper, broader- take your adjectival pick, they are all good. This allows me the listen to probably the finest sounding Naim system that I am yet to hear.

I have the 10BQ version. It brings significant improvement in a passive naim system. There are similar gains like an active system. I would say it's half way to the active mode. The Equitech is excellent with tv and dvd, too.
There are some downsides, when used with active system. The transformer has many pluses here, too, but I feel that bass is loosing some weight and the sound is a bit faster. I could not arrange the dedicated earthing, which might be the reason for that. Also I'm not sure if it can handle three big amps. In theory it should do that.
Regards,
Emil

Defintely going to hook one up for our showroom. I went to the Canadian master disrtibutor to inquire, and am going to stock a couple models. What a HUGE diff. in the noise floor, etc.!!! Do you guys not have a local dealer to lend you one or two??

Hi Emil,
...or anyone else. Can you spell out what the downside is in an active system, please. Thanks, Gerry

Hi all:
Problem: I've scoured the Equitech site, and can find no model designated as either a *10BQ* nor as *7.5BQ*.
I then see a page on their *2Q* which they refer to as their "flagship" model.
[note to self: hole in head is getting larger.]
Can anyone make sense of all this?

I take it back, I've now found the 7.5 and 10 QB's.
Tsunami, there're on the price link, and 'toroid isolation tranformers'.
But even then, none of them is listed as 325 pounds.
I better phone them, as I still don't understand the relation between these and their 'flagship', the 2Q.
Help anyone?
Thanks,
gerry

Thanks Gerry. I agree. Whoever planned the content of that website knows his stuff but is incapable of putting himself in the shoes of someone (like me)who does not know their stuff. I have sent an email with some questions and Im looking forward to a reply.

Equitech makes many different types to meet the needs of the application..
The 2Q type is a plug in the wall type that has gfci and other devices that degrade the sound. The Trans in a box form(10BQ)has nothing to get in the way of the music. This is why I went with this type. I went to the factory and was impressed by the size and weight of the transformer. There is SO much storage,I could never see running out of juice during any listening session..At 9 to 9:30 on the volume via the 552 my system was drawing 3 amps. The 10BQ is rated for 100 amps and will run at continous 85 amps all day..Not likely to ever get to that point.
If you are intersted, you need to call and ask for the Naim 10BQ price. It is way lower than the retail price you see on the web..
I went to Equitech to pick mine up. Yes, it is 325 pounds and was a 4 hour project to mount.
The results are wonderful.
Go here for more info:
http://www.equitech.com/products/industrial/xfmrs/toroid.html
It does list the 10BQ as 182 pounds.

Hi Gerry,
I didn't realize the thread has been moved to the padded cell. I think that ET altered the balance. The sound is a bit bass light. This is the only downside. Please note that I don't have a dedicated earth. Also I noted some faults in my 10mm2 dedicated spur. It affects the bass, too. I have to figure out the problem. I would like to compare 6 to 10mm2. I have now best results with a 2.5mm2 dedicated spur + powerigel.
Regards,
Emil
