Sand-filled plinth for turntable.

I was wondering if anyone has tried these, and what the result had been. At present, I am using a Rega 2 sitting on a sheet of contiboard which is then spiked onto a heavy, floor standing record-storage cabinet. Floor is concrete.

John,
Sounds like toooo heavy for a Rega. I had a Planar 3 once that wasn't singing before it was sitting on its own dedicated support, the Rega wallbracket.
Have fun.

I once went from a Mana Reference turntable to a sand-filled box as a turntable stand. Sonically, the Mana was great, but on my suspended wooden floor, I had insurmountable footfall problems; the needle would skip in the groove if I so much as breathed too hard. I thought plonking my (40 kg) tt on 100 kg of sand would help.
It didn't.
More relevant to your question, the sound also went to hell. Basically, it became boring, no dynamics, less sparkle in the highs, less definition to the bass, and singers who sounded like they really hated having been dragged out of bed just about 30 seconds before the mikes had been turned on. (Okay, okay, I'm exaggerating, but I like a little hyperbole now and then as much as the next forum nerd.)
I have since heard another installation with sand under a turntable, which also sounded anything but exciting. So my recommendation would be to keep sand away from turntable mounting.
Regas really sing, unsurprisingly, on the Rega wall shelf.

Thanks for the replies.
I shall take you both up on your advise and move the Rega to it's wall shelf.
I've been without my hi-fi for a year and a half as my Cyrus 1 was irreparably damaged during a house move.
Now awaiting arrival of a Nait 1, hence the re-appraisal of equipment siting. From all accounts, it should be quite an improvemnet.
Thanks again.

Or you could look out for a Mana wall shelf, allegedly even better than Rega's own.
