Steely Dan

Another band that interest me that I know little about. Any recommendations on a good place to start - I usually prefer to avoid greatest hits however in this case it may be the place to start?

Thanks
Gary

Has all the albums in the same order as when they were released...costs less than $40 US on amazon. Too many great songs to list, but note especially Bodhisattva, Kid Charlemagne, Night By Night, Pretzel Logic, Black Friday, Hey Nineteen, Throughout these albums the great guitar work is from Denny Dias, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and Larry Carlton.

Not that keen on the mastering on the boxset still prefer the originals by a fair distance.

Yes, especially since the individual albums have now been remastered.

Even more importantly, to fit seven albums on four discs, albums are inevitably broken up, which is not good for albums with impeccably flowing sequences.

They are in the same order and sequence as the original albums.

They are and they aren't as the bonus cuts interfere with the running order.

My point is that some of the albums are split across separate discs ... in order to listen to some of them in their entirety one must physically change discs, disrupting the continuity of the listening experience.

Katy Lied is my favourite, I never really got on with 2 against nature but you cannot go wrong with the rest. Aja is perhaps slightly over rated and certainly a tad too slick.

Maybe I should look into this band again. I have The Royal Scam and and of course, Fagen's The Night Fly. I just didn't get moved by either. It all makes sense on paper: good bunch of musicians etc. but it just left me wondering what the fuss was all about. I must be wrong of course, I'll try to dust off the CDs and see if I can rectify the situation.

I would say they make the Eagles sound like ice cream van jingles. Perhaps you would like to expand on your Steely Dan listening knowledge and open a debate. At the moment your throwaway comment seems to indicate you are fu**ing deaf.

Come on now Denis, I won't have that; there are some really good ice cream van jingles.
Please click here for one of my favourites.

Rotf,

Great stuff by JR, thanks. I sadly missed his mini uk tour earlier this year. Hell will definitely freeze over before I saw the Eagles. In fact if they were playing across the road I would go away for a couple of days Big Grin

I would also recommend 'Can't Buy A Thrill' but going slightly of piste I would also suggest trying Donald Fagen's 'The Nightfly' - It's an excellent recording too, Smile on vinyl.
