Electrical Spikes
Posted by: NB on 02 December 2002
I have just lost the use of my Roksan Xerxes turntable. The power supply has just stopped working. Last week I lost the use of my CDX. This was cured by replacing the electrical power chord.
I am no electrician and just about understand the basics but I suspect that I am experiencing power sureges and this is blowing the fuses. I suspect I am on an old electrical supply.
As I am not sure how long I am going to be staying in my property I am reluctant to insall an independent spur for my system but I wonder if there is any way I can protect my system from further damage?

The CDX went while I was at work the CDX was not in use at the time, my partner tells me that the screen on the tv went off sudenly and returned. I leave my CDX on all the time.
The distribution box was replaced be the electricity board in 1997 and as far as I am aware it is a new consumer unit with mcb's. I know the previous house owner made a few dubious changes to the electricals but a qualified electrician has tested all my elecrical circuits and informs me that they are safe.
It is the fuse in the plug that is blowing and not the trip switch that is blowing. I have never tripped a switch while using the CDX, but have tripped a switch by using an iron and switching one of the lights on.
Another strange thing that happens is that our sky receiver keeps losing our "favorite channels" and we keep having to re-set them.
Rather than single plugs are there any blocks I could use as I need 8 plugs for the hi-fi and four plugs for the TV video etc!!

I would never take the chance of risking a damage on my gear. I would rather live with the knowledge that a a safety device would have a somewhat detrimental effect on my gears performance than vice versa.
I don´t know what the English terms on such stuff is but here in Sweden we call it, if translated direktly: Net filters. You hook it up to a earthed wall output and it makes shure that no elecrical spikes reaches your gear.
Naim kits perform lesser with that. But better that, than not at all.
I think you are suffering from spikes or even worse elecrical storms and it will kill your kit in the long run.

Thats why I am looking at installing extention blocks with surge protection. I don't want any of my hi-fi equipment to be damaged.

If you are getting surges on you mains, I would want to get this sorted, rather than try and protect against the problem. Cost of installing separate spurs is likely to be around the same cost as some of the options above or maybe slightly higher, but the musical gains will be much greater.

Yep. That´s must be the kind of gear I was trying to promote.
Surge protection, another new word I´ve learned today.
