Syd Barret Tribute gig The Barbican

Posted by: ChrisG on 15 May 2007

Last Thursday at the Barb what a great evening, it all flowed wonderfully and the light projections took me back to the 60's. A cast of thousands:
Captain Sensible
Kate McGarrigle
Martha Wainwright
Kevin Ayers
Robyn Hitchcock
John Paul Jones
Damon Albarn
Chrissie Hynde
Kate St John
Vashti Bunyan
Andy Bell
The Bees
Mike Heron
Nick Laird-Clowes
Some bloke called Roger Waters
Dave Gilmour
Nick Mason
Rick Wright
Joe Boyd

But why oh why couldn't Mr Waters (who chose to perform an acoustic song in the first half) bring himself to join the other three members of Pink Floyd as they played a rousing "Arnold Layne" to close the show?

Don't hold your breath for a Floyd reunion.

Gig of the year!

Chris

PS As someone pointed out, Syd's lyric to "Astronomy Domine" contains the phrase "icy Waters"

Wow!!!
Who did you have to kill for those tickets?
Kevin Ayers - What a genius

I saw a report that certain noisy individuals where calling out "where's Roger" during the "Pink Flo" bit
Posted on: 15 May 2007 by Kevin-W
What happened was this (I woz dere):

After Waters performed his piece (he also gave a rather (moving talk about Syd) with Jon Carin, someone shouted out: "Pink Floyd!".

Waters, with a big grin on his face said: "later".

At the end of the show Gilmour, Wright and a VERY uncomfortable looking Nick Mason (Rog and Nick are best mates remember) walked on to perform "Arnold Layne". When an audience member shouted "Where's Roger?" Fat Dave said, "But this is us".

Somebody I know, who has been close to the Floyd for very many years (and who has always been in the Gilmour camp) said that Big Rog - who was more than happy to play with the others, especially as it was Syd's night, but was "snubbed" and "friozen out". The likely villain(ess) of the piece was Polly, Gilmour's increasingly controlling wife.

I would guess that Gilmour and his missus are unable to custodianship of the PF "brand". Rog coming back into the picture endangers this.

Just my tuppenceworth....

I think you're right, apparently "someone said something that was taken as an unintended slight and Dave didn't want to play with Roger".

Did you get the feeling that it should have finished with "Shine on"? That was the rumour backstage before the gig started. No matter, it was a lovely evening, looking forward to "Games For May" at the QEH on 26th May

Reads like a list of my musical heroes - what a superb cast - Mike Heron, Kevin Ayres and Vahsti (what did she sing) and the Captain. It must have been a great night.

Sounds nice. Was it filmed for BBC4?
Posted on: 16 May 2007 by ChrisG
Malky

Sadly not filmed, which is a shame because it was very cinematic. BBC4 have filmed a lot of stuff from the Barb recently so they missed out here. I'm certain that it was audience taped though.

Roger Waters needs to let go of his Dynamo ego and give Floyd fans what they want... A proper reunion.

Don't think it's Roger that's holding things up.

It's certainly not. As I said earlier, Gilmour does not want to relinquish his custodianship of the brand, which a reunion with Waters would almost certainly involve.

Why is it as soon as I log onto a tech W/S (ie dimeadozen) it looks like it's written in a foreign language?

re: Dimeadozen

You have to be a bit obsessive to join. I sat for hours at a time, clicking the "join" button. Put on some Kraftwerk and got in a robotic mood. It took clicking sessions 3 or 4 times a day at work and at home over several days but I finally got in. (Boss didnt even notice, which is a rather poor comment on my job!) You decide if it is worth it! All I can say is that I look forward to seeing what is on the tracker every day. The music is phenomenal and very diverse.
