Interconnects for CDS2

Posted by: uem on 12 September 2002

Hi everyone

Sorry to reheat an old topic – however my search in this forum failed to bring up suitable answers.

What brands of cable (DIN-DIN interconnects) other than NAIM or CHORD do you guys use from your CDS 2 to a NAIM (82 or 52) pre-amp?

Currently I’m using a custom-built (DIN-DIN) VanDenHul (both NAIM and Chord were previously used on my old CD2, but the VdH was much more musical, especially it took the harshness of the treble. Since the CDS 2 is different league, the cable–game seems to start again!!)
Your experiences, including links to previous threads and/or other forums is highly appreciated.

I use Nordost Red Dawn which I found to be better than the standard interconnect, although it is (I think) quite expensive (~300GBP). The dealer I got it from was happy with a sale or return arrangement so why not try it if you can find one who will also offer this?

Tried to mail you - no joy!

Martin,
Thank you and all others - for your input.

I'm currently in contact with the Nordost dealer - DIN interconnects are not stock-items, though (which makes a home-demo a bit more difficult)

I've got a new email adress - ursmarti@bluemail.ch
Unfortunately, I'm unable to edit my user profile - how can I do this?

We have yet to hear a silver interconnect that sounds better than our supplied cable. Different, yes, better no.
This may not be the case in non-naim systems of course.

I used vey expensive XLo reference for years between CDS2 and M Levinson pre-amp. The Naim cable is better than the XLo for connection to my Naim re-amp.

guess I'm a little "out of the ordinary" in that I use the standard Naim item. It plays Music.

'Did play around with some fancy Chord plaited cable (CDX etc) - suddenly The Dandy Warhol's bass player fell off the back of the music completely.

As Paul says - different, not better.

In reply to my own thread - and as feedback for those of you who may be interested:

My newly acquired Nordost Red Dawn interconnect (Special order for DIN-DIN) from CDS2 to my 82 is beyond question a good choice. (I briefly used the standard NAIM cable, which I previously replaced with a Van de Hul and now the Red Dawn)

A better defined and more natural sound stage, better bass extension and the absence of that last little bit of sharpness in the treble are the “factual” parts.
Difficult to describe is that emotional side, the “it’s just sounding right” feeling. When I put on the sampler CD that came with the “Gramophone Awards 2002" issue, Cecilia Bartoli was virtually standing there in front of me in my living room.
I've seen & heard this great artist both on stage and in concert and what I felt was "an extremely close approximation to reality"

These impressions reflect the “out-of-the box” state; as Nordost advises a 80 hrs burn-in time, I’m looking forward to progress from Dawn to sun light smile

For all of you, who want to squeeze the last out of your gear, do give this interconnect a try!

I really don't understand why some people between Naim cdp and Naim pre use non Naim cables. It was shure that the results are accidental and like playing a lottery. You pople must know that Naim is not a hi-fi, it is a formula for best results in musical presentation at home. We MUST respect that and don't change any of elements in the magic electric formula.
Second, we all must know what silver make to the sound. Third, we must to be thankfull that Naim is a company which made a reasonably low cost cables which sounds apsolutely better than any other with Naim electronics.
There are a lot of other cables elswhere, they look nice and have a good resolution etc, but connected with Naim they are not produce a SYNERGY, the most imprtant aspect in audio presentation.
Mr. Paul Stephenson is right, believe him. I was fooled myself few years before with a 500-600$ cables connected to my Naim and after I was try NACA 5, the sky was opened and ther was no turning back. Naim "sound" is imposible to get without Naim cables. Don't let to put you off a cheap look and little price of NACA 5 or Snaic, because it is just what your Naim wants, they are arms and legs of your electronics.

Indeed Ozren,

that's the party line, spelled out in your post. And sure it's great that NACA5 prices are really low. I myself use regular Naim interconnects.

However, if everybody on this forum spelled the party line, and nothing but, well, then there wouldn't be much of a forum. The interest is in folks experimenting, and I sure like to read about it, though I usually have no intention (or funds) of going down that road myself.
