HDX Networking with Mac OS X
Posted by: Lemming on 22 January 2010
Hi guys, my HDX is connected to home network according to instructions given in "iTunes-Mac Supplement". However, although it recognizes my iMac, it shows it at an "offline" status. I tried to enter password etc for full access, as stated elsewhere in this forum, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
P.S.:SMB is on, public folder has all the relevant files, workgroup is set to NAIM. HDX is hard-connected to airport express and I use an airport extreme as main router.

You might try keeping the workgroup as default (workgroup)
Can I also suggest the following.
In mac preference, click sharing.
Then click files and folders.
In advanced you have stated that SMB is on, thats great.
However that does not make your public folder automatically SMB (I think) so back in the fioles sharing in the middle is an area to add folders for sharing. Click add an navigate to the folder you want to share even if its within the public folder.
Just FYI you do not need to put the files in the public folder, simply add it in the files sharing area as a share and it will appear on the workgroup (in due course not always immediatly)

I tried what you suggest. When I added the subfolders, HDX would not initialize. On power up it would just show the CD image with a "please wait"...But I'll try this without including the music folders in the public folder. I still don,t understand why it shows my computer "off line".

What types of files do you have in there?
Also turn off the firewall onthe mac if you have it on.

Flac and Wav. Firewall is off.

Are they in sepearte folders by artist or all lumped in?

All my music is arranged in the form of separate folders for each album - e.g. folder "Downloaded Music" > Collage - Nine songs of John Lennon, Dianna Krall - I Care, Duke Ellington - Uknown Sessions e.t.c.

This is really frustrating and totally unacceptable for a 5.500 euro Hi-Fi "marvel". Problem is than no one, including the Naim representatives in Greece are in a position to offer solid advice. I've followed instructions (which by the way refer to the - imminent? - revised software/firmware) step by step, several times, but the result is still zilch. I still get the "no network shares located" message, or "share is off line" at the best (when the unit manages to locate my iMac). The interesting thing is that the iMac shows the HDX in the shared resources (SHARED tab under the DEVICES).

If you have some time, setup a new user in your iMac, change the normal user to the new user, generate a new folder put few (not so many) wav or flac tracks in it. Then share this folder in the system preferences, then try to connect.
If works this way then go back to the normal user and repair permissions.
Can help.

iPad does not support Flash Player a defacto piece of internet software, Not Naims fault that one.
Lemming how is your HDX connected to the network exactly, and same for imac?

Hmmm, not sure about that one.....One could argue it was somewhat limiting of Naim to build a Flash only version of the HDX UI, not to mention Windows only for the Client software...
Talk to 10 web designers and you'll get 5 who love Flash and 5 who won't go anywhere near it....I was always of the understanding it was good practice to either never design a site 100% Flash based or at the least have a HTML simultaneous build and give the option at the entrance to the site....

The GIGANTIC iPhone/Touch? Why would you want such a huge device? I dont see it taking legs until it is actually a computer with comparable power, speed, and adaptability of a true computer.
It is a GIANT iTouch/Phone. Nothing more.

It would make a fantastic remote control for searching and playing music etc.
For 300 quid that makes it cheaper than logitechs harmony 1100.
That being said I don't think it has IR so it would only be able to control computer based hifi.

Allen,
All i am saying is, why would you want a huge iPhone/Touch? The whole point of them is that they are compact, handy.
If the thing was like a laptop, running OSX (or whatever), but it used the interface and multi-tap of an iPhone. I would even consider it. As it is, I would rather have an iPhone.
I though the iPad was going to be a computer, not a HUGE iPhone.
I agree the apps will be nice. But it will be little more than an iPhone. All current apps should run just fine on an iPad, whats your worry?

I can think of one! Being very long sighted, at a short distance the tiny display of the iPhone or iTouch would be next to useless for me. To use my mobile phone [el cheapo model as you would expect] I have first to find my very heavy reading glasses, and even then it is a struggle. On the other hand if this machine were not too expensive, and had the same or greater functionality as the iPhone or iTouch, it would certainly be usable - even desirable - for me without the labour of wearing the horrible reading glasses. I see it is £300, which would be a nice enough price, but not the first thing to get!
Other people may well have different requirements ...

I agree with you, PC. It is a bit underwhelming, really. I was expecting a fully functioning computer, not an ENORMOUS phone. I can't wait to see someone walking dwon the street with one of these held up to their ear! (OK, it doesn't do that, but it's a funny image in my head anyway).
Having said that, using it as an iTunes remote to control my music would be very nice. Whilst the "Remote" app on my iPod touch is great, some more screen-space would make browsing for music just that bit nicer. I also travel a fair bit, and this thinj for in-flight entertainment would be pretty nice. Pity it's not more "widescreen".

the cost of streamer remotes are around £300 sonos etc. i agree the size would be great. album details/tracks would be easy to see for all.if the battery life is better than the iphone that to is useful. allan
Posted on: 28 January 2010 by pcstockton
not even close to the battery like of a iPhone/Touch. 10 hour max. And you know what that really means when you consider typical claims of battery life.
I dont see how this iPad is more desirable than a small macbook (or whatever they are making these days), given what people in here seem to want to use it for.
If you want a bigger display than an iPhone, why not get a lapper and FULL iTunes to control your mini or whatever you have. Why do you want remote app on a iPad?

It is okay Patrick, I am not about to shell out £300 for it! The big LG screen on my bog standard PC is ideal for me! [Still cannot see all my typos though!].
I should get a wireless mouse for a few £s only and that can work as a remote!

Oh, that's what I do use. If I didn't have the Macbook Pro though, the iPad would work fairly well for this one function. Better than the iPod touch. Not as good as the Macbook Pro. That's all I'm saying.
Like I said, I'm with you here. Underwhelmed. I have no plans to buy this limited-function piece of bling. Though I still chuckle at the thought of some prat wandering down the high street with one of these stuck to his ear.

My HDX is hard-connected to an Airport Express. I have an Airport Extreme as my main router. My iMac is hard-connected to the Extreme and at the same time via WiFi to the Express. Yesterday, all of a sudden the shares appeared on line. Today, they appear off line again...simply frustrating. A strange thing...when I turned on the HDX it could not log in. It kept searching. I turned in off, then on again and the second time it managed to log in to the network...
