has the british press brought forward this story at all?

not sure if anything such as this has ever happened over there. it's in part due to the existence of new software which can filter trillions of emails almost like a whale baleen. you fellows are supposed to be protected from this sort of random snooping, no? but you have you "official secrets act," of which mrs. t was so fond. anyway, the whole thing makes me wonder if gwb did his graduate studies in romania.

I have always presumed that the security services could trawl e-mail traffic as a matter of course. Seems sensible to me.

Bob

So what next then for the security services? Opening and reading all letters? Monitoring all phone calls? Recording all personal conversations? GPS tracking of all individuals? Video surveillance equipment in in all rooms in all houses and buildings?

I'm no leftist civil libertarian by this is dodgy ground.

Cheers

You don't think that this goes on already to a certain extent?
International phone calls can pass through security agencies word recognition S/W to "pick up" selected words or phrases., I am sure e-mail can be scanned in similar way.
If the police find your stolen car due to an embedded GPS chip that's OK but to check your speeding or illegal location that's wrong?

I am surprised that you are surprised by the news that the security agencies are monitoring any thing that is possible to monitor.

If you do not want to be watched, go and live off mains and cable, they can probably find you if you use a receiver of any kind.

No need with modern encryption techniques.

I am sure that our frinds in Cheltenham have key word activated filters watching almost everyform of electronic communication, and a huge array of supercomputers dedicated to breaking encryptions.

It only becoms sinsiter if we end up with a government with scant or no regard for the rights of the individual, the rule of law or the sovereignty of Parliament......Uh oh. hang on a minute........

"If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear" - Yeah right!

Internet - monitored.

You got a mobile - they know where you are.

NHS Database - they know your health.

Contact with the police - they can take your DNA even if not guilty.

Transport - they can read licenses plates and in high security areas recognise faces.

CCTV everyware

Finance - well tax and customs integrated

ID would cards bring it all together. (I'm not religious but...) I guess the ID card number would look something like this 123456 123456 123456 and be required for everything.

A benign government could theoretically be ok but if it becomes non benign (and you are the target) your stuffed as everything about you is known.

The loss of liberty and freedom in this country is terrifying not because where it is but where the law allows it to go!

There are so many cases of laws supposedly designed for X being used for Y, we can't even protest anymore without getting approval from some government organisation!

1. Who do you think originates the encryption?

2. Google. "ECHELON"...
