Artists not mentioned much on forum: Robert Calvert

Robert Calvert was a member of Hawkwind from time to time; his most famous composition being Silver Machine. He died after having a heart attack in Ramsgate in 1988 aged 43, but left a legacy of some very fine elpees

Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters (1974)
Lucky Leif and the Longships (1975)
Hype (1981)
Freq (1984)
Test-Tube Conceived (1986)

These are all worth a listen to.

Calvert also wrote some of Hawkwind's best songs like Quark Strangeness and Charm, Urban Guerilla, Spirit of the Age and Psi Power.

My favourite Calvert album is Hype where Bob sings the songs of Tom Mahler. Tom Mahler and Robert Calvert being one and the same.

Without Calvert Hawkwind still cut some great records Warrior at the Edge of Time being a superb record thanks to or despite, I'm never sure which, but I think thanks to the influence of Michael Moorcock. However, for me, it was with Calvert that they really shone.

It was a shame he suffered from a mental disorder or he might still be with us today creating great music and a follow up to Centigrade 232.

Anybody else like his music?

She was talking about the world situation
She was sitting on a coffee-bar stool
I heard her say something clever 'bout inflation
And the Ayatollah's rule

It was over my head

Her eyes were plastered with a lot of mascara
And her hair was cut by Vidal
I was wondering how I was going to score her
A real live intellectual

And then she started talking bout a new production
Of Dostoyevsky in drag
The way her mouth moved was pure seduction
When she said she'd written it up in a mag

It was over my head

Everybody's talking 'bout a new way of thinking
Getting plugged into silicon chips
All I could think about was lateral linking
And I just watched her Mary Quant lips

It was over my head

She asked me was I ever into Fellini
And what did I think of Godard
I tried to imagine her in a bikini
And didn't find it was hard

She said have you seen that Fritz Lang movie
Where the hero loses his soul?
I said I didn't think that sounded too groovy
I'm more into rock and roll

It was over my head

Love captain Lockheed-some great tracks-especially Aerospace Age Inferno and Ejection.
Hawkwind album "Quark, Strangeness and Charm" is also a fave of mine.
Hawkwind "Space Ritual" would not have been same without his contributions.

Hi Steve - yes I agree

Captain Lockheed was an extraordinary elpee when it first came out and has stood the test of time very well. Still hangs together as an excellent musical story even after all these years.

Try and catch Nick Turner's Space Ritual -they are keeping the spirit of Bob Calvert alive-latest gigs have many of his songs in the repertoire-(gigs last 2 3/4hrs)-very much in spirit of early Hawkwind.
Studio Album-"Otherworld" also worth a listen-includes contributions from Michael Moorcock

Cheers
