She really is natural at it isn't she?

Fantastic.

Yes really, really good. Look out for the repeats if you like Joni and missed it.

I particularly enjoyed 'California' with her playing the dulcimer.

If that was the same 90 min program broadcast on Public TV over here a couple of months ago, it really was excellent. One of the most enjoyable TV programs I have ever seen.

The Joni concert was only 30 minutes - I could have easily listened to her for much longer.

Man, I wish I could tune in BBC here in the USA ...

Joni Mitchell is just flat out one of the true geniuses of music. I have very mixed feelings about some of her later work (and by later, I mean anything after Shadows and Light), but these feelings in no way diminish the uncompromised brilliance of her first dozen albums ... an uninterrupted run of masterpieces the length of which has been matched by only a few others.

I recommend these albums:

  • Song To A Seagull
  • Clouds
  • Ladies of the Canyon
  • Blue
  • For the Roses
  • Miles of Aisles
  • Court and Spark
  • The Hissing of Summer Lawns
  • Hejira
  • Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
  • Mingus
  • Shadows and Light

Essential albums all.

All best,
Fred

Does anyone know if what was on bbc ever made it to DVD? It looks like the BBC4 half hour was a cut down version of a show because basically she lost her voice towards the end, that does nto seem likely for half an hour.

I recently bought a vinyl DCC-remaster of 'Court & Spark', which sounds absolutely superb. Wonderful voice.

Thanks Denis

I do like Joni and will investigate your recommendations. I have a lot of the albums Fred recommends

Song To A Seagull (CD)
Clouds (CD)
Ladies of the Canyon (Original vinyl release)
Blue (Original vinyl release)
For the Roses (Original vinyl release)
Miles of Aisles (Original vinyl release)
Court and Spark (Original vinyl release)
The Hissing of Summer Lawns (CD)

My favourite Joni album is Ladies of the Canyon closely followed by Court and Spark

Joni is one of my favourite American/Canadian singer songwriters. There are others like I really like too.

All the best, Rotf

PS BBC4 used to show lots of half concerts at 10.00 on a Friday night when the channel first started. I was particularly impressed with the Melanie (Safka) one: I have more albums by Melanie than I have by Joni. They also did a great programme about Janis Joplin which proves they can put out some great stuff when they Try, just a little bit harder.

PPS - I've noticed I much prefer female singers doing these shows to male singers - I just couldn't figure out the appeal of Neil Young or the Eagles (did they really sell all those records, who bought them: not me Confused). I know others will disagree.

Later this month (23rd), a bunch Joni's CD's are being released (Remastered & Expanded). There are not details yet on the extras, but check amazon closer to the release date. I have most of the Joni's output on vinyl and the early stuff on HDCD (which is fabulous). I would recommend though that you get USA releases as they do make a difference.

Check Joni's excellent web page here. My admiration for Joni was enhanced even more when I discovered we shared the same (birth) surname. The evolution from a Folk Troubadour to a Jazz Diva? is unique and will stand the test of time. The new album with Herbie Hancock on board will be worth waiting for.

Joni is my hero and has been for 30 years.

In a world where the term genius is bandied around for here today, gone tomorrow nonentities, Joni was, and is, the real thing.

As Fred says, everything before Shadows and Light is truly indispensible. For the brilliance that went before I can easily forgive her for a drop off after.

Please Joni, record an album just you and your guitar. I'd love a back to basics version of new and old stuff.
