Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

Posted by: anderson.council on 13 June 2007

They've just announced Australian dates for this in August and as gigs for bands like this are a bit thin on the ground here I'm seriously thinking about it. "Heaven and Hell" is the only Black Sabbath album I have (apart from the live one after "Mob Rules" which is on vinyl in my parents loft - I hope) and I really like it but I never got around to seeing them when it was released.

Has anyone here seen this line-up ? If so was it worth it ? I never saw Ozzy Sabbath either so comparisons won't help me.

Cheers
Scott

IMHO the first 4 records are the best....some fabulous songs on them. I've never seen them live but would dearly love to.

I was an enormous fan in the early days and loved their first three albums. I saw them in 1972 and they were fantastic. However I can't really regard them as Sabbath without Ozzy.

So why hesitate? If it's no good, it's no good, but you have to grab everything that comes sometimes.

Treat it like a tribute band, nothing to loose except a couple of hours and a few dollars.

I like the first three albums (especially Master of Reality), but kind of lost track of them after that - never seen them live, a bit too loud for me.

Hi ScottC,

I suggest that you don't treat them as a tribute band! It's the Black Sabbath line up with Ronnie James Dio on Vocals and Vinnie Appiche on drums. I'm going to their London gig at Wembley. If you've already got both Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules then you will already have a more than fair idea of what the set list will be like. Like yourself I didn't manage to see them back in the early 80's so I would grab it with both hands if I were you! We won't get a second chance...

Best regards,
Mole Man

I was not saying they are. For purposes of ScottCs indecision as to whether to go or not or if they are Black Sabbath he should treat them as a tribute band and not to be disappointed if they don't come up to scratch.
If you consider them the genuine BS then OK.

Dont often post but have something to add here.

I saw this line up live in 81 (I think). Hammersmith Odeon. An enjoyable concert is what I recall, but not legendary. I would love to be able to say it was fantastic but that is not what I recall. Not with the sheer comic energy of Motorhead concerts of the same period. But at least as good as Iron Maiden were in the early eighties (I was lucky enough to first see Maiden supporting Priest in '79 which was very memorable) and definitely better than better than ACDCs surprisingly weak effort to support Back In Black (I saw that at the "Victoria Apollo".)

Heaven and Hell aren’t Black Sabbath. They are Ronny James Dio’s new backing group.

Outstanding performance from a 65 year old

The disappointing thing is, it will probably cost me £80 for a couple of tickets instead of the usual £35.00

Thanks for the input guys. I reckon I'll give them a go. Tickets on sale tomorrow.

talltony - I saw Maiden in June 80 on their first headline tour in Dundee. Memorable gig and we met them afterwards which was a bonus. I think I've still got the tickets with their autographs on the back somewhere. Also saw AC/DC on the Back in Black tour at the Glasgow Apollo. I remember it as being a fantastic gig but next time I saw them (I think on the For Those About to Rock tour a couple of years later) it was like a tribute band going through the motions. So it seems they blow hot and cold.

Cheers
