My Ten:
1. Seventh Tree - Goldfrapp . Britain's best group at the moment - and this could well be Will and Alison's best album. Gorgeous!
2. Knowle West Boy - Tricky . Fantastic return to form after a few iffy releases.
3. The Hawk Is Howling - Mogwai. Just ace - a criminally overlooked band.
4. Snowflake Midnight - Mercury Rev Another sparkling return to form. Will probably piss off everyone who loved Deserters Songs
5. Portishead - Third I suspect not many will be playing this at their dinner parties!
6. Strange Attractor - Mercury Rev. Will really rankle the Americana crowd.
7. Consolers Of The Lonely - Raconteurs. Jack White is God.
8. Dig!! Lazarus Dig!! - Nick Cave. Always up there.
9. Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid. Who could begrudge them?
10. Only By The Night - Kings of Leon. Watch those stadium rock tropes, boys!

Nigel,
hadn't I posted my list, earlier, I could have sympathized with your list, easily. All ten are great choices (no wonder they appear here...)

Here are my ten - the first five were easy; the rest took some thought.
1. [em] (Wollny/Kruse/Schaeffer - [em]3
A piano trio like no other - there really *is* something new under the sun.
2. Bennie Maupin - Early Reflections
Maupin is wonderfully supported by a group of young Polish musicians.
3. Toumani Diabate - Mande Variations
The beautiful, soothing sound of Diabate's cora.
4. Morton Feldman - The Viola In My Life
Hard to believe this is ECM's first Feldman CD - the two were made for each other!
5. Scarlatti - Piano Sonatas (Pletnev)
A cheat, as this is an old recording, but I'll remember 2008 as the year I found Scarlatti.
6. Arve Henriksen - Cartography
Although it hasn't completely clicked with me yet, I'm willing to take Adrian's word for it!
7. Alboran Trio - Near Gale
An advance on this piano trio's fine debut album, "Meltemi".
8. Marilyn Crispell - Vignettes
A lovely album of solo piano reflections.
9. Dans Les Arbres - Dans Les Arbres
The nearest thing to a Christian Wallumrod album this year - quite inaccessible, but weirdly fascinating.
10. Bobo Stenson - Cantando
Another great piano trio CD.
The reissue of the year, for me, was Keith Jarrett Trio's "Setting Standards". My live highlight was seeing Angela Hewitt perform all of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier over two weekends in Manchester - simply magical.
Regards
Nigel

Agreed, Oliver.
Some of Haim's choices I can immediately agree with and others make me switch to JPC/Amazon, immediately. That's what an exercise like this one is great for...
cheers

Reissue of the year has to be
Electrosonic by the late great Delia Derbyshire
Delia Derbyshire was ahead of her time and one of the earliest creators of electronic music, she is most famous for her work with the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop in Maida Vale, at which she created the haunting original Dr Who theme in an age before synthesisers.
Delia also came up with a piece of electronica in the late 60s that sounds like it was recorded in the mid-90s.
Delia favoured the use of a green metal lampshade as a musical instrument and said she took some of her inspiration from the sound of air raid sirens, which she heard growing up in Coventry in the Second World War.
Electrosonic is a work of unparalleled genius; if you didn't snap it up when the limited reissue was released then chances are you'll need to pay upwards of 500 notes for a copy. Which is a shame as it means most will miss out on this absolute gem and never be able to hear just how wonderful Delia's compositions were.

Stefan, have you heard the Quadro Nuevo Weihnacht CD? Definitely, a seasonal stressbuster. Must have been a fabulous concert last night, I had to make do with a recording on BR-α from Burghausen in 2004
Posted on: 01 January 2009 by sjust
Huw, talking of radio recordings: There is a concert recording of Galliano, Rubalcaba and Haden on TV (see: here), tonight (well, January 2, But still TONIGHT), which is worth while seeing, methinks.
Happy new year, Huw !

Well, for me the greatest 2008 release is the Cannonball Aderley Somethin' Else reissue of classic records on 45RPM clarity vinyl.
It's a beautiful box set of 4 single sided 200 grams 45 RPM vinyl.
It comes with the latest vinyl profile of classic records VSP-II (deep grooves) and with the new vinyl formulation named clarity vinyl (transparent) that is beautiful and is suposed to be static and distortion free over time (doesn't have the metal particles of the black carbon that black vinyl have that gets magnetized over time and many listenings).
Well, what I really know is that also the Bernie Grundman mastering from the master tapes is superb.
The sound is really awsome, incredible, soo transparent and without distortion, big bass and treble, spacious, what a sound...it doesn't get out of my head.
I already had an USA Blue Note audiophile 180g reissue and the diference is amazing.
This clarity vinyl 45RPM box sets of classic records are truly special and will be very expensive in the future 2nd hand market.
Is already out of print but you still can get it if you search some sites quickly.
classic records are no longer pressed at RTI, classic found a pressing plant in California that makes the 200g records for them with semi automatic pressing machine that is suposed to have a better stable temperature than the automatic from RTI. That's why this classic box comes with the "hand made" description on it.
Anyway seems that it was RTI that refused to press the 200g classic records because they have plenty of 180g waiting to be pressed and is easyer for them to press everything in 180g.
Also seems that the previous vinyl profile of classic records VSP-I were a problem in quality control for RTI.
just as a curiosity seems that RTI have 500.000 new vinyl titles waiting to be pressed (with almost a 3 months waiting list at the pressing plant), let's hope that they don't start messing it up again with vinyl as in the 80's the industry did.
Anyway this classic records clarity vinyl box is Somethin' Else

Peres - I have been waiting for the Analogue Productions Hoffman remastered 45 RPM version of Something Else which comes out this month. I wonder which will sound better?

I was also waiting for that one, but it is being recheduled again and again, I wonder why? perhaps they can't do it better than clarity vinyl...who knows...
Well anyway, now I am not waiting for it anymore.
But I also have some Analogue Productions 45's like the Blue Train (so I will not buy the clarity vinyl of the Blue train) and the analogue productions are also great.
But I bet the Somethin' Else on clarity vinyl will be really better than somethin' else

Even if they can do it better is impossible to be mutch better than that, and the package of the box is better for sure.

GREAT choice Munch

On CD is one of the best releases of 2008, but I have both of the records on vinyl from other older years

the Cd is a package of the albums "Danseparc" and "Mystery Walk", the former being a broad-shouldered, boisterous, in-your-face kind of album, while "Mystery Walk" is cooler, more distilled.
Nice music
