Holidays Accomodation in NYC?
Posted by: Jean-Christophe on 02 April 2008
Hi,
I will be visiting New York city begining/mid august for 4 to 5 days.
I'd appreciate to get advice on good value for money accomodation (hotel or flat), preferably in Manhattan.
We are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers
any hints?
many thanks

For something reasonably priced and a bit different, you could try The Pod hotel. It's in East midtown (on 51st near lexington), is surrounded by reasonable restaurants (and an exceptional Indian restaurant), and has modern, clean rooms, with good amenities.
Bunk rooms would be idea for teenagers (each bunk has it's own LCD tv), although these use shared bathrooms, which are well appointed. There's also free wi-fi, and an in room safe.
I stayed there with my 12 year old Son last year, and was very satisfied. The rooms are not large, but few in NYC are. Again, it's unusual, but will likely be a hit with children.

Cheers for the heads up on that one, Phil; my housemates and I (3 dudes) are going there in September...
Could be a messy thing though:
- Flying on September 11 (really!)
- ...with BA
- ...from (in all probability) Terminal 5
Small carry-on bag followed by US clothes shopping then methinks!
EDIT: CHRIST ALMIGHTY - HOW much for one night? Ouch. Hostels then...

You might want to have a look at the "Seafarers & International House" (www.sihnyc.org) which is pretty cheap and also in a central location. A few of my work colleagues have stayed there and all have sang its' praises - fairly basic, but very clean. That was all they wanted, as they were out and about sightseeing most of the time. They paid less than 20 quid a night, which is rather good for NYC!!
Don't be put off by the name, by the way - it is not exclusively for seafarers! I'm thinking of giving it a go later in the year myself.

NICELY Mark - will check it out
My housemate has some good leads, but that one sounds ideal. Will definitely have a gander at that one...

Whether it works in the US, it's always worth contacting Hotels direct, after the sharp intake of breath they quite often come back with a more sensible price.
