Mounting a Prefix in a LP12

Posted by: John on 26 November 2002

The instructions I have for mounting a prefix in a LP12 state:

"Attach prefix to the underside of the front right-hand corner brace of the turntable plinth, using the three wood screws provided."

My prefix included 3 (1cm) small screws, 3 (2 cm) larger screws and 3 plastic tubes that are 1cm long. My arm is an ARO and my guess is the platic tubes are adaptors for different arms as some might hang lower but the instructions don't talk about it. Should I be using the long screws and plastic tubes with my ARO? I assume the plastic tubes go between the prefix and the corner brace.

John,

IIRC the longer screws and spacers are there if you are mounting the prefix to a ????? turntable (can't remember the particular brand). Use the short screws on a LP12 and mount it directly to the plinth brace per the instructions.

HTH.

Hi all:

I don't own a Prefix (unfortunately), but one has to wonder how the mounting system affects sound quality changes with respect to the amount of mechanical energy getting into the Prefix.

Consider that if the TT is in the same room as the speakers, the airborne vibrations reaching the Prefix will be attenuated to some degree by the plinth, but if the Prefix is then attached to the plinth...

Keep in mind that the Prefix was developed at a time when there was nowhere near as much concern regarding mechanical isolation of electroninc circuits. I believe Vuk uses a Prefix with his P9, so Vuk, have you experimented?

Best Regards,
