Close Monitoring Speakers As Cheap as Chips

Posted by: pm on 20 November 2002

Chaps,

Has anyone got some good suggestions for cheap speakers to be used for close monitoring around a computer setup.

Current usage is for a vinyl setup through a home made Naim based phono stage into a Naim 42 and via a Midiman Audiophile 24/96 into powered Goodmans Maxamp speakers.

Assuming that a suitable power amp will find its way to me, what would you trawl the classifieds for?

Cheers,

I'm assuming you want some small speakers in the sub 300mm height class

I used a pair of KEF Q15's for a while quite sweet and then graduated to a pair of Rega Ara's. Significantly better top end but not as full. If you want better try Spendor S 3/5's or Dynaudio Contour 1.1's

I'm currently doing some vinyl to CD transfers using a Rega Planar 3 & Ortofon MC25FL into a 72/140 and an RME Digi 96/24PST soundcard. The results are incredibly good and merit a decent speaker setup for monitoring.

If you want to go down market I have a nice pair of Celestion 3's going cheap. They are sealed box oldies but sound quite good.
