Windows Media Player 12 -> Uniti problems?
Posted by: LeeTom on 20 November 2010
I read in a post here recently that there may be problems with Windows Media Player 12 streaming via uPNP to the Naim Uniti.
I'm curious as to what they might be, because I just put together this exact setup using two different Windows 7 / WMP 12 computers and the uPNP streams work perfectly. Initially, the Uniti appeared blocked in Windows 7's new "Media Streaming Options" part of the Network and Sharing Center control panel, but after allowing it, and then further "customizing" it to allow ALL music, it played up a tiny tiny storm.
Anyone have any insights on what I should be looking out for?

It certainly should work but like most Microsoft programs whether it will or whether it will be worth it in the end is open for debate. It is certainly awkward particularly if you use a range of codecs and there is far better out there.

I understand that WMP12 is definitely "awkward", to put it lightly, but despite that I'm still curious to know what specific problems people have found lately so I know what to look for if I do have problems!

Isn't awkward enough ...?

I think that the biggest problem is that it ties up a PC, and it is not very convenient for ripping CDs.
I found that ripping with DBpoweramp and storing the music on a separate NAS to be much more convenient. I keep backups of the ripped music.

Using a laptop running W7 64bits, streaming from the laptop was very long to begin, then I observed interruptions in the stream. I was using wireless connection for both the laptop and NaimUniti.
In theory it should work, but in my specific case it is not working well for whatever reason.
Using a different machine, Windows XP and Foobar Upnp I have no issue.
I have not investigated the problem any further.

To answer the original post, it works fine out of the box to my UnitiQute, once you've opened up the firewall as described and assuming your network works.
What you should be looking out for?
Well, WMP doesn't support FLAC out of the box.
Instructions for making it play FLAC are googleable and straight forward. However my experiments suggest that you can't rip or stream FLAC with WMP irrespective of what codecs you install.
It does not "tie up a pc" to use the wmp uPnP server, which runs as a service. You don't even need to run the media player itself to stream.
I've tested most uPnP servers for Windows 7 and FLAC excepted WMP streams as well as anything else.
