UnitiQute, Windows Media Player 12 'Play To' Function
Posted by: Grahame on 06 October 2010
I have spent some considerable time attempting to stream music from WMP 12 using its 'Play To' feature. I eventually contacted Naim Support and received the following response, which I hope they won't mind if I repeat it here:
"After further conversations with R&D their comments were:-
ah I see the issue, he is trying to send files from the WMP to the Qute from windows, this doesn't work, this is not a feature we support if he browses from the Qute that will be fine"

You can do this with WMP11, but there is an outstanding UPnP issue with WMP12 that MS is aware of.

David
Are you able to be a little more specific about what the issue is?
Thank you

Grahame, I have successfully used Play To from WMP12 running on Windows 7 32 bit to my Uniti (not Qute) running latest available (ie. not 3.0.0) firmware.
Can WMP "see" your Qute? Are you on the same network subnet?

Thank you for your post.
The answer to both your questions is yes.
Here's a lot more detail:
Whilst my UnitiQute’s UPnP function works fine - if a little slowly when first finding a song - connecting to WMP 12's media server, when I attempt to stream music to the UnitiQute using WMP’s ‘Play To’ the problems begin.
My UnitiQute, a Neatgear DGN2200 (a wireless-N 300 modem router) and Widows 7 are all connected together wirelessly.
The router shows my UnitiQute as an attached device, however, it does not show up in the UPnP section of the router manager.
On Windows 7’s Network Map, the UnitiQute is shown as a discovered device that cannot be placed in the map.
Under ‘Change sharing options for different network profiles’ in Home or Work profile, I have ‘Network discovery’ turned on and under ‘Media streaming’, I have allowed all network devices, including the UnitiQute, to be able to share media.
Within WMP, I have selected ‘Allow remote control of my Player’ and ‘Automatically allow devices to play my media…’
When I right-click on a song (a 1.41 mbps WAV file) within WMP, and select ‘Play To’, I am able to select my UniteQute. A ‘Play To’ dialog box opens up showing that it has connected to the UnitiQute, however, it then spends a long time ‘Contacting media service...’ before eventually telling me that it ‘Failed to receive media information from media server.’
Turning off the firewall makes no difference.
I assume that when the ‘Play To’ feature works it automatically stops whatever is playing at the time on the UnitiQute (though I have select UPnP first to try and make it work but to no avail).
Any thoughts you may have would be gratefully received!
Thank you
Grahame

Hi Grahame,
I tested again this evening using 320kbps MP3s and it does definitely work in my setup. That said, it isn't super smooth and occasionally waits 20 or so seconds before starting a track.
Have you tried other file types and lower bit rates?
My WMP settings are the same as yours and my firewall is disabled.
My network is Apple TimeCapsule running 802.11n on both 2.4 and 5GHz. My Win 7 laptop connected on 5GHz, Uniti (sadly) on 2.4GHz 802.11g.
Might be worth checking out your router? Do you have another available to test on? Failing that, you could try a cross over cable and static IP addresses to make a direct network conection between the two.
Or maybe it is a bug introduced in firmware 3.0.0 and my Uniti will stop supporting this when I upgrade...
Let me know how you get on and whether there are any other settings that you would like me to check out.

I have tried another router but encounter the same problem.
Your post prompted me to take a different tack.
I've installed Asset UPnP and Asset Control, and though a little tempermental, I am able to stream to my UnitiQute, though Asset Control's volume controls, mute etc do not work.
As David Dever has pointed out there appears a problem with WMP 12. In principle though, it is possible to stream to a UnitiQute.
Thank you for your help.

Use of these controls is not possible at the present time. If you look back at the threads:
EyeConnect, Mac Lossless and UnitiQute and Very technical UPnP question (for Qute), they are both on page 2 at this time, and look for the posts from 'SteveSky from Naim R&D he explains some of what is and is not possible. Makes interesting reading and is useful to understand the current situation.
