DAC for DVD

Posted by: alainbil on 27 March 2010

use my iMac to watch video DVD. The iMac is connected to my NAP 122x, using some cheap cable, and the sound is, guess what? Lousy.
Using a mediocre audio standard, the Macintosh analog output and a low cost cable, this is not a big surprise.

I am wondering if the sound would improve substantially with a DAC, doings so I would bypass the iMac DAC and the cheap cable.
Does anyone ever try this?
I am using this forum since this is mostly a question about DAC, not AV.

A dac will make quite a big difference, I'm using an old Sony DVD player through a Dacmagic and the results are very impressive for DVD and CD playback, hopefull today I will hook my iMac upto it and see what happens

Absolutely. The difference between analog out and digital out through a dac on a mac is significant.
