I picked up the 180gram version of Look Ka Py Py by the Meters a while back for less than a tenner, and it's a gem.

Gang of Four -- You want "Entertainment!" first and then "Solid Gold".

All of the Meters albums are good. My favorites are, in relative priority:
1. Rejuvenation
2. Cissy Strut
3. Fire on the Bayou
4. Trick Bag
Cabbage Alley is in there somewhere close to the top also, but really, they are all so good you can hardly go wrong. It sort of depends on whether you want a more stripped-down sound (Cissy Strut) or richer musical complexity (Rejuvenation).
Don't overlook the Wild Tchoupitolas album which essentially was a Meters album with singing by the top Mardi Gras vocal group of the time. V. funky.

Meters
Generally I agree with Markus. Here are my top 5:
1. The Meters
2. Rejuvenation
3. Look Ka Py Py
4. Fire On The Bayou
5. Trick Bag
There's also a good compilation, but I can't remember its name offhand.
Gang Of 4
Matthew is right there. The EMI CD reissues ar extremely good.

Hi folks,
Don't know much about The Meters so I'm off to explore in the near future courtesy of the recommendations here.
I can heartily agree that the GO4 album to own is Entertainment. Solid Gold is very different but perhaps more representative of their later stuff.
Psychadelic Furs - it has to be Forever Now!
Happy listening!!!

As with most bands (!) the first albums of the Furs and the Gang of 4 are the best. Entertainment! is quite nice, though a little dated in places (I love Guerrilla War Struggle!) and of the Furs album the first 4 songs are worth buying it for. Later albums are poppy and crappy. Don't know the Meters' albums. Might try them out.

I played Entertainment! again last night and oh boy was I wrong! It's brilliant and not out of date at all. The sound (original 1979 Canadian pressing) is very hard, fast and punchy and the lyrics are very much to the point indeed. Definitely worth buying!
Oh and the name of the song is 5.45 and not Guerrilla War Struggle.
S***y!
