Seasick Steve

Posted by: worm on 15 March 2007

I only recently came across this guy after hearing a track on Gary Moore's Blues Power show on Planet Rock (shame that series was so short).

I understand that he stole the show on Jools Holland's New Year Hootananny but I missed that. But no mean feat given the other performers on the night.

Anyway, I picked up his new CD a few weeks ago 'Doghouse Music' which is just fantastic. A sort of stripped down blues / trance music played on a 3 string guitar. I have no idea how he gets a guitar with only three strings to sound like that but it is absolutely fantastic played loud. Sound is not completely dissimilar to R.L. Burnside. Highly recommended.

Even better he is playing a UK tour in April including a date in Bristol (yipee). Several of the dates still have tickets available.

Plus Seasick's first album (with the Level Devils) 'Cheap' is being re-released early next month to coincide with the tour.

Anyway I just wanted to recommended Seasick Steve and see what other forum members thought.

Cheers

Only fair to mention that Diccus alerted us to this in his esoteric post here. The fact that Diccus got the name wrong may have hidden this fact from a lot of people Smile

Well worth a trip to see him - and the album is fantastic. There is an interview with him here.

It is an excellent disc. If you like him then start listening to Junior Kimborough and the whole Fat Possum roster of Artistes.

Happy to acknowledge Diccus's post - I really struggled myself to track Seasick down. Gary Moore just mumbled the name on the radio and all I picked up were a lot of S's and Steve.

Still got there in the end with the help of Amazon.

Colin

I got tickets from alt-tickets.co.uk for Bristol only a couple of weeks ago but I guess the Thekla is not very big so they could have sold out.

Cheers

Worm, let me know what the gig is like. A good friend of mine went to see him in Germany and said he was outstanding. With the Thekla being a very small venue, it should be good!

Enjoy!!

Yours sincerely, a very jealous person.

Yeah saw him on Jools Holland, stole the show alright, Weller was stomping his feet. Been playing his CD for about 5 weeks and have got tickets to see him in London next month, venue is small so should be good.

There are a pair of tickets for the gig on eBay (not mine) if you still wanted to go. Only a few hours left and no bids...

You were interested to hear about the Thelka gig.

Well it was last night and pretty amazing to.

After creditable support from the Gemma Ray Ritual, Seasick’s set stars with no sign of the man himself – just the tortured wail he coaxes from a guitar. I understand this is a usual Seasick habit of entering from the back of the venue and walking up through the crowd whilst crunching out the riffs on one of his POS guitars (as in it is a Piece of ****). Walking past me, he is smaller than I have expected, but is clearly enjoying himself.

Seasick used an interesting assortment of instruments – from what looked like a small classical guitar with a pick-up, through the legendary $75 three string trance guitar to something with one string, two tin cans and a plank of wood (his DiddlyBo). A small amp is balanced on a chair next to him and a bottle of Jack Daniels sits on the floor (doctors have recommended red wine – cue wry smile).

The set is mainly ‘Doghouse’ material although there were a few songs that sounded new? One he wrote for his dog who died last year and another that was an ode to Thunderbird both firmly in the Doghouse vein. Great renditions of Dog House Boogie, Hobo Low and Fallen off a Rock were firm crowd pleasers. Throughout Seasick’s guitar playing carries the relentless rhythm with its’ distorted howl.

Between songs Seasick deciphers of some of the hobo language for his middle aged, middle class European audience (a group in which I count myself) and describes some of his experiences on the road. This also buys him enough time to work out which POS guitar is plugged in and how badly it has gone out of tune in the heat. He got fed-up mid way through the set with some of the background bar noise – but he was having too much fun for it to spoil his evening.

Overall I was left being amazed how much can be created with so little. When you strip everything away one man and a very battered guitar can make amazing music. Seasick would say, as he did on many occasions ‘It’s all good’ – but I thought it was a damn sight better than that.

Cheers
