Spikes or Blu-tack between Kan's and stand?

Posted by: Alco on 05 May 2001

Hi folks,

Well, I got me some Linn Kan's this week to match with my Nait-2 & CD-3.5 + f/c.
I'm very pleased with the sound of these babies.

At this moment though, I'm still using my Target HR-60 stands for the Kan's. Now, my previous speakers (MA Studio-2se) were sitting on these stands with some blobs of blu-tack.
Now, I don't have any left over spikes to go on the top-plate of the stands, and if I would it would look horrible, because the top-plate is smaller but also dieper then the Kan's.

With Blu-tack between the Kan's and the stands it
looks fine to me, and it sounds ok.

But, is it still better to get some top-plate spikes or would it absolutely be an improvement
getting me some Kan-ll stands ?
(I'm afraid it'll be hard, getting my hands on one of those)

Are the Kan-11 stands still available new ?

Greetings,
Alco

So the Kan-11 stands are stille being made ?
(haven't found them on the Linn-site)

How come most small speakers work fine with blu-tack underneath 'em, and Kan's don't ?

Well, if they are still available I'll order me some Kan-11 stands.

Greetings,
Alco.

Alco, most small speakers don't work fine with blu-tak underneath them. Blu-tak usually muddies things up, makes image im-precise (no, we're not going near sound-stage yet!), and generally 'warm and cuddlies' a pair of speakers that could do better. Sorry to disagree so fully! Coupling your cabinets (which the blu-tak does) to the stand is less than ideal, especially when it's compliant.

Kans need spikes, very rigid stands - and preferably Kan II or soundorg stands. Congrats on your purchase!

Rico - all your base are belong to us.

Hello Rico,

Thanx for your reply.
Well, my previous speakers seemed te be doing fine with the blu-tack blobs underneath, but with
the Kan's I haven't been able to listen to 'em with spikes (and dedicated stands)

But what you said about blu-tack making the sound more muddy and warm, makes sense.
Well, I do want the best for my Kan's
(within my budget, that is)so, I'll get me some Kan-ll stands or some Sound-Factory stands.(almost identical, but a little cheaper and easier to get)

Thanx, y'all.

Hi Alco

I never actually tried blu-tack, but adding top spikes to the Kan II stands and taking off the squidgy feet on my old Kans was a huge improvement - if my memory serves as it was a long time ago!

Hi Alco,

I agree with Rico, until you put Kans on spikes they do not give anywhere near their best.

You guys are absolutely right!

Before ordering some Kan-11 stands and trying to
sell my Target HR-60's (for "peanuts")I tried the following.

I found some very small, but sharp spikes at a
"HiFi"dealer here in my town. I thinks they're from Monitor-PC (German Audio-brand)
Anyway, 8 of those tiny spikes costed the same money as one CD.
I took 'em home and attached them on the corners,
on top of my Targets.

wow, now we're talkin'
Just one day ago they were sitting on the blobs of Blu-tack, witch seemed fine to me at first,
but those tiny little spikes made the Kan's much
more faster and the imaging became more stable too. Hmm, I think I'll keep those Targets for a while. (they look better than the Linn stands,IMHO)

Well, so much for my,cheapest upgrade ever, report!

See ya'

Greetings,
Alco.
