Female Vocalists
Posted by: DaveBk on 26 August 2008
I'm looking to broaden my hoizons... I enjoy a wide range of female vocalists:
Amy MacDonald
Katie Melua
Amy Winehouse
Dido
Gabriella Cilmi
Julia Fordham
Alanis Morisette
Amy Lee - Evanescence
To name a few... but, I have recently be blown away by Claire Martin - 24bit/96kHz downloads from Linn Records.
Who else should I be listening to?

Claire Martin is a favourite of mine too - and I've been fortunate to see her live a couple of times too! You could also try:
Clare Teal
Jacqui Dankworth
Jenna Witts
First two are obviously firmly in the Jazz world of Claire Martin (I especially like JD, but it's close thing on stage or recordng); Jenna is from folk roots but writes much of her own stuff - fresh, vibrant, great voice and not what I'd call 'folk' at all. A must - I can't stop playing her debut album 'Bare Foot and Eager'.

Class - great choice - she is a folk singer of the highest order produced by those great guys from Show of Hands and you can't get more roots than SoH.

sorry you won't get any jazz singers from me as I know nothing about jazz singers

Nearly forgot:
Mary Black - always accompanied by such great muscians too.'Babes in the Wood' is my personal favourite.
Duffy - recording has compressed dynamics to my ears but strains of Dusty Springfield mixed with Petula Clark is very enjoyable.
Beth Rowley - just got this ('Little Dreamer') but it's extremely varied and is growing on me!

Who does not need a record company.
Munch
I didn't she's on my list - Karine Polwart doesn't need a record company and Shirley uses Fledg'ling rather than the big boys.

Natalie Merchant (Ophelia, Tigerlily, or the rather good Retrospective set)/10,000 Maniacs (Unplugged)
Alison Krauss
Madeleine Peyroux
Suzanne Vega (I think that her recent Beauty & Crime album is her best so far)
Eliza Carthy (Rough Music for more traditional folk, Dreams of Breathing Underwater for some more modern take on folk)

Fantastic response everybody - I feel the worlds largest Amazon order coming on...
Some of these fine ladies are already in my collection, but so many new names as well.
Many Thanks!

After all that I'm feeling like a dunce, I've only heard a dozen of them. Guess I'm going to have to make a list and look at the used section.

2 stand-out albums for me:
Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley - brilliant range of songs on one album. Rock, power, and deft jazzy vocals
Shelby Lynne - Just a lttle lovin' -- better than Dusty for me.

I'm surprised that Joni Mitchell has not been mentioned. Her voice has matured well for her later albums, for example Turbulent Indigo, Taming the Tiger and her latest release Shine.
An honourable mention also to Imogen Heap who makes her own albums.

Renate Aschauer-Knaup or Henriette Kroetenschwanz for short; singer with the wonderful Amon Düül II. She also played a pretty mean tambourine.
